5K - how are we coming?

Is anybody else a little frustrated with how slow the 5K bandwagon is rolling?

I've been waiting all year for some more news about the LG 31.5 inch 5K and it just seems dead silent.

I really think that the 31.5 inch's physical size is absolutely perfect for pixel doubled "retina" 1440p effective.

Why do you need that?

"Need" is the wrong word around these parts....haha

That said -

Play around with a 5k iMac and you probably won't be asking that question.
Simply the most beautiful experience I've ever seen in computing. I just find 27" 1440p a bit too small and don't want to use scaling -- thus 5k 1440p @ 30"+ would be superb for me.

Wouldn't even be worried about this if I liked 27" 1440p sizing, as I'd just get the Dell 5k

Problem with the 5k iMac is that it will thermal throttle heavily with an i7 in it. Veryyyy quickly, as well as the GPU. So you pay all this money for performance that the computer can't achieve

I'm only talking about the display - which is 2nd to none right now.

I agree about iMac's as a complete product, but I only want the display (at larger than 27")

Speaking of retina.. It is just a slightly different display. Doesn't do anything special, it just has the display panel much closer to the gloss glass screen

I say we focus on getting 4k capable hardware before jumping to 5k lol

I think you should look that up again - Retina is a marketing term for very high pixel density. It's not really related to the display panel proximity to the glass.

I will look into it, from what I've learned, the panel is closer to the screen than most other displays. Coupled with of course, higher pixel density, and a bright and vivid display, you get Retina. I am most certainly not positive on that, but thank you for the correction.

I think we'll see more 5k once DisplayPort 1.3 becomes ubiquitous.

5k isn't for gaming. I'm in the same boat as the OP. I want 5k, but I also want more than a 27" monitor. I may get a 4k now and then buy a 5k when bigger ones come out. Sadly, the Phillips that's coming out is also 27". Really don't get why they make huge 4k monitors, but no 5k monitors over 27"

I think we will see 8k take over before 5k really settles in... as long as we have Korean companies flood the market like that did with 4k causing lower prices and much quicker adaption than if it was left up to Sony or those guys who would still be selling $3k+ 4k screens if it was up to them

8k 17"

haha, we aren't going to be seeing consumer 8k screens for a long time.

I'm waiting for a 5K ~48" ultrawide. Now that will be an UW worth getting. At this point I'd happily choose a 40"+ 4K over the 1440p UWs. No comparison for immersion and price is about the same.

Now after hearing of the initial OLED experience (particularly colour), I'm also looking at the 40"+ 4k oleds to drop in price a bit and come with Dp.. then I'd be keen.

I'm waiting for something similar, specifically a ~55" curved ultrawide. It will have around the same vertical height as a portrait 24" 16:9 (which I use now). At that size 5K gives a DPI roughly equivalent to what I have now, but I'd really prefer around double that (10,240 x 4,320).

You sure? Because it seemed like 4k was a LONG way's off until Viz and those companies flooded the market with cheap 4k TV's as monitors and then almost over night 4k prices plummeted and became widely available..

Or you thinking more, the market will milk 5k screens to get as much money as possible..

4k is clearly the new common standard going forward. There is already 4k content, and there will be a lot more. Seems a bit counter-productive to get a 5k screen where interpolation is required to watch 4k content. It would likely look worse than simply watching 4k content on a 4k monitor.

It's for content creation. What you call 4k is UHD. I believe pros prefer working on true 4k monitors. I wouldn't be surprised if they were happy to use 5k as well, but options are limited now. For photography, 5k is still a bit behind the curve (but not at 27").

OTOH, 8k would resolve about 31 megapixels, so you could edit the vast majority of images at 1:1 on the screen. Even the 36 MP cameras would mostly be at 1:1.

That would be glorious! Not limited by monitor size on my usual desk, so I can keep the options open. Damn that 55" would be immersive as hell in gaming, plus brilliant for productivity/content creation.

Fingers crossed for CES.

5K is a waste of time unless you need to do a lot of photo or actually need the res for work. With only 4K content available (and limited amount) you don't want anything that is not a perfect pixel match and also happens to be a 4X pixel match for 1080 content since no scaler is perfect. I figure that after my current 4K, my next upgrade maybe a 8K by the time of the Tokyo Olympic (which will broadcast in 8K in Japan).

I figure i will be skipping 4k all together for a TV, a computer monitor..if the price is dam cheap maybe, but otherwise no, i can settle for 2 x 1080 for now or a 2560x if they come down more in price.

I think 5K is to 4K as 1440p is to 1080p. 1440p still has a REALLY low adoption, in fact I'd venture to say 4K has a better claim to market share than 1440p: which is unfortunate because 1440p and the UW versions of it are the best for PC gaming right now.

edit: I just looked up 5K as a resolution, and it is exactly the same ratio to 4K as 1440p is to 1080p. So essentially, It will most likely occupy that space in the market as the "proffessional's UHD monitor" versus the "Mainstream UHD monitor". Also, 5K is also known as 2880p, or UHD+. Go wikipedia.

I just recently upgraded to a 40" 4K screen for productivity reasons, and it is awesome, I could easily see 5K at a similar DPI be even more awesome, but for gaming it requires a bit of horsepower, and the added definition makes old games look even older...

However, a 40" 4k screen is REALLY good for games that allow you to mod REALLY high FOVs. 110+ degree FOV looks AMAZING in 40" 4K, as its like having an ultrawide.. with some top and bottom FOV as well. too bad about 60Hz refresh rates being the standard: but nonetheless, I'd like to see a rig than can kick out 60+FPS at 4K.

I think 5K vs 4K -- like 30" 2560x1600 versus 27" 2560x1440 -- faces the same adoption problems due to prohibitive price (compared to 4K for what you get, just like 30" 2560x1600 vs 27" 2560x1440) and the extremely limited panel options available.

Would I like a 5K monitor for the extra screen real estate and clarity? You betcha!

Am I willing to settle for the only panel out there, which IMO is way too small to even warrant 5K and won't even look as good as a 55" 4K OLED in the same price range (since they're coming down near $2000 nowadays)?

Hell. No.

totally behind you there. There are two different kinds of people: people who see resolution and think "Sharpness and detail!" and those who see the same resolution and think "Desktop space!". The current 300 DPI 5K monitor that dell/apple supply right now is purely for the "Sharpness!" people.

I would rather have a 4K monitor at 100-125 DPI and have decent contrast.
