5Ghz conroe (TAM)

What this seems to indicate is that Conroe will scale extremely well as time goes on. While it will be a while before we see 5 GHz chips, it will probably happen with new manufacturing techniques and some tweaks.

These people are using insane types of cooling though, you WILL NOT see any current or near future processors at these speeds in everyday systems. Not unless dell starts phase cooling their $500 PC. :D

true, but this still shows a very valid point: core should be a very expandable architecture. Even on liquid nitrogen netburst chips couldn't really get much beyond 5ghz and they are far less effecient than core (highest I've seen is some pressies in the 7.xghz range).
 
i remember at one of the IDF's, Intel had one of their Northwood chips run at 10ghz.

For those who didn’t know or don’t remember and are to lazy to click the link. Intel showed a P4 Northwood running at 4GHz in 2002. It was liquid cooled and did nothing but display the speed the CPU was running.

I am sure it was far from stable.

No they had like single transistors running at 10Ghz in the lab! Not a whole chip.

Furthermore, on current silicon technology 10ghz has proven to be about the maxiumum clock speed that we can get a transistor to. Hence why 5ghz has tended to be cap (with rare exceptions) for netburst chips since at 5ghz the ALU's (and other parts of the rapid execution engine) would be running at 10ghz.
 
I need to get my hands on one of these ASAP. Does anyone know what the max overclock on air cooling was?
