Hey guys , is it normal that my 5970 is running on 65-75c on eyefinity mode(3x22") when playing games like wow? The idling temperature is 40c , somewhere around there. After having a 75c or so gaming in eyefinity mode,i went back to regular of surfing internet for 30 minutes or so , it is currently on 60c.Im using the CCC ATI Overdrive utility to check the temperature btw.

Yep normal. I know someone with two 5970's and the one peaks @ 91C. They say not to worry until you get over 100C.
 
With graphic cards I wouldn't worry until you see smoke or if it melts through the pcb.
 
Yeah, I'm actually surprised it's running that cool for you. Do you have a really well ventilated case or something?

That's not bad at all to be honest, it's pretty good.

Im using an alienware p2 chassis with the default fan. And i thought the temperature was pretty bad so i removed the side panel when gaming lol. I also bought a Aerocool Xtreme Turbine 120mm and Enermax MAGMA 120mm hopefully to bring it down more, and i'll be getting the silverstone raven rv02 soon :)

Yikes. Keep that up and your case is going to the nexus of a small tornado. :p
 
The card ramps up the cooling when the card is doing work and generally trys to keep the temp <= 90 degrees, I think it auto throttles at 100 degrees. Anything below 90 is basically normal under load, the cooler is really good actually, very well built card IMO.
 
After installing the new fans things will get interesting(noise). But then again to be honest i dont really get why people do not like noisy computers, maybe its just me because i'm always playing songs from itune / gaming so i dont really hear them.

Also , what does it meant by using the fans to cool the northbridge(is it some parts of the motherboard?)

It's the chip on the motherboard located between the CPU and first PCI-E slot usually and probably hast the largest heatsink on it besides the CPU one.
 
oh , so its the heatsink for the motherboard? for my case its the black heatsink with red EVGA letters ?
 
Northbridge is just a large chip that control flow of data between the CPU and RAM and I think links to the PCI-E bus. Because of the amount of work they have to do in modern computers they require at least a passive cooling solution (Headsink) or sometimes an active one (Heatsink+Fan)

He has a northbridge, it's IS the x58. He doesn't have a memory controller in his northbridge though. On the Core i7/i5 series it is in the CPU. On the Core 2 Duo/Quad series he would have a memory controller in his northbridge.
 
Your northbridge is that wierd looking black metal thing that says EVGA X58 SLI that is right above your video card. Except for LeninGHOLA all the above responses are correct as well.
 
alright thanks for the info , always learning new stuff :) so the northbridge is ACTUALLY below the black evga x58 sli heatsink eh ?
