Basically after hours of digging, I simply tried to put my eyefinity group into landscape mode versus portrait mode. Magically crossfire on my 5970 now works on the games I have tested. In portrait mode, I was able to get Company of Heroes to work in D3D 10 mode, but not D3d 9.

Summary

5970
+Portrait Eyefinity Group
+Dx9 Games
Failure

5970
+Portrait Eyefinity Group
+Dx10 Games
Some success so far

5970
+Landscape Eyefinity Group
Success

Damn thing is, I prefer a portrait setup and my favorite game at the moment (Borderlands) breaks in a landscape eyefinity setup :(

Anyone heard of any fixes?

kinda silly to ask, but does all the monitors support portrait modes? or is it videocard thing?

My eyefinity is in landscape mode, I never tried portrait mode.... /scratches head' hhhmmm...what a way to spend saturday night!:D

Yeah in a single card configuration everything works.

I am even currently trying a tri-fire setup with an extra 5870 and can't get it to work either :(

Finally found some proof regarding this

This was at the time of 8.66 drivers, but I guess the 10.3 drivers don't fix crossfire in portrait mode yet :(

Radeon 5970 Eyefinity support

Right now ATI Eyefinity support with multiple displays is officially limited to single-GPU configs only. CrossFire doesn’t work just yet.

Now the Eyefinity support does come with a number of caveats. For starters, support is limited to the games listed above only. No other games are supported yet at this time. In addition, only landscape configurations scale properly. Running portrait mode will still function, but will rely on the primary GPU only. And again, Eyefinity support is limited to the 5970 card at this time.

Ask Kyle, he runs his 5970 in portrait mode.

If it's not supported then I wouldn't consider it a fail.
I wouldn't consider Nvidia Surround a fail either because that too is not supported as of yet.
Both configs uses more than two GPUs so there definitely an issue running three monitors in CF/SLI.

I read on the wide screen gaming forums that crossfiring more then 2 gpu's has a bandwidth limitation issue with the bridge in higher resolutions? This might not be fixable for the tri & quad gpus in eyefinity. It does whoop ass single monitor however. the " = crossfire fail " didn't register with me earlier. lol
