5970 Only Using 1 GPU in Games....help?

Quick summary

Installed a 5970 last night and it will not use both GPUs in the games I tried. I have used both the 10.3a and 10.3 drivers, w/ and w/o the crossfire profiles, and the car is at stock settings. Inbetween using the different drivers cleaned out all the ATI drivers with Driver Sweeper.

Trying to run in Eyefinity (3x1 Portrait), have also deleted eyefinity group and attempted to run on a single display as well.

Kombustor (MSI's version of Furmark) multi-GPU version loads both cores fully, so the other core does function.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Any aid is greatly appreciated!

Make sure the Catalyst A.I. setting in CCC is set to either Standard or Advanced. If you turn it completely off, you loose Crossfire.

How do you know it's not using both GPUs in games?

I was using MSI's Afterburner to monitor GPU Usage. In games the one GPU goes up, the other stays at 0%. Running multi-gpu Furmark, both go to 100% on Afterburners charts.

Sorry I should have mentioned that AI is set to standard. I tried toggling it Off/On last night w/o results.

Last night I tried Borderlands and CoD4

There are no options in Borderlands to enable multiple GPU that I saw unless I gota dig into the ini files.

I guess I should have checked in the CoD4 options. :)

I had the same issue with MSI Afterburner with my 4890's in crossfire....... It maybe MSI Afterburner causing it to not run..... Might be a bug.

I had to totally uninstall the drivers a couple times to get it to work agian.

Will try that when I get home.

Update

Uninstalled Afterburner - no affect.

Downloaded and setup Crossfire Xtension app with a profile for Borderlands - no affect.

Next step -> strip out the drivers and try again :(

You should also try the 'crossfire status icon', which is part of the CCC. Right click on the taskbar icon, select your card (you'll have several entries, for each of the display outputs), select CrossfireX, and check the 'show status icon' option. This option won't show up on inactive outputs.

If you see the icon while playing (lower right hand part of the screen, if I remember correctly), then the game has a crossfireX profile and should use your multi-GPUs.

Maybe a silly question... but you are playing the games in full screen mode, right?

Well COD4 has no option for windowed mode, so he's playing that one in full screen.

SLI/XFire don't work in windowed mode?

Fresh drivers = no go

Playing in full screen.

I have the crossfire status icon check since last night, but it has never showed up :(

This is getting rather stupid as I know Borderlands works with the 5970 because of HardOCPs review of the card had Borderlands as one of the test games.

Next step might be 10.2 drivers just for shits and grins....

I have just gotten myself a 5970 (upgrade from 5870).

In Furmark, it uses both GPU's fully...

In Bad Company 2 - it uses ~40% of the GPU's and gives me no real advantage over the 5870.

Any help?

Perform a settings reset.

Also, what resolution are you running at?

Perform a settings reset.

Settings reset of what?

1680x1050 - but 120hz, so I'm trying to keep 120fps minimum.

1680x1050 @ 120 should stress the GPU just as much as 2560x1600 @ 60.

I'm trying to keep double the FPS, just lower res.

What FPS are you getting? And I mean a game settings reset. I don't know if BC2 has a safe mode, but whatever gets you back to clean settings might help. I assume VSync is on also. And you have all the settings super high, and Anti-Aliasing?

Ok more testing.

Disabled Catalyst AI and it fully uses 100% of GPU2.

Yet, I get roughly the same FPS (80 - 120fps).

Yep, tried all variants.

8x aa, etc.

Can't do a settings reset, I've done a full re-install of Windows tho, which reset the entire game config - it's teh same.

BFBC2 is highly CPU bound, if you're CPU bound because you have a slow CPU especially if it's only dual core, then changing graphics settings won't help. Try overclocking your CPU for a bit of a frame rate boost or consider investing in a new one, preferably a fast quad core if you've not already got one.
