5970 Audio over HDMI?

How do you get the 5970 to output sound via the card? Is it done via the DVI connection? Or do I have to buy a special adapter to fit the proprietary port?

I hooked up one of those last night.

I changed the setting in windows 7, and the mixer showed sound was going to the device.

I have:

Realtek HDMI Output that's the one I was using.

Realtek Digital output.

ATI DP Output - This is an option, but it won't let me enable it.

I'm using the WHQL 10.3

You need to use the HDMI slot on the card to get sound.
 
check in the drivers.. there should be an option in there for enabling the audio on the card its self if im not mistaken..

the ATI DP output is for the display port audio only..

and you can use the DVI ports as well aZn you just need a DVI to HDMI cable..

Correct, I thought the layout of the 5970 is the same as the 5870 which has a native HDMI port.

Also, I don't think an aftermarket DVI -> HDMI cable would transfer audio, the included DVI -> HDMI adapter does something to the signal so he'll just need a regular HDMI cable and use the adapter from my experience. ( I could not enable the audio using a DVI -> HDMI cable, until I purchased the adapter then it worked pretty flawlessly. )

The 5970 does not come with a HDMI port, which is unfortunate. You have to use the special DVI -> HDMI adapter to get sound. So now I'm just waiting on the adapter to arrive.
 
run out to a frys or microcenter, they sell the DVI to HDMI adapters for a couple of bucks.
 
Anyone have any other ideas? I ended up getting the correct adapter in and still no sound over HDMI.

edit: you have to use the dvi port on the right... really????

Sorry to bump an old thread but I also need help with this.

I have a gigabyte 5970.
No included DVI-HDMI adaptors.

I have tried a 4870 with a generic dual link DVI to HDMI adaptor and I GET AUDIO!
Unfortunately I dont have that entire system anymore, so I can't check drivers etc.

I use the SAME cable on a 5970 DVI port (tried bothof them) and I get
"ATI HDMI Audio - NOT PLUGGED IN" in windows 7's playback devices screen.

I have also tried an ATI adaptor: 6140063501G
http://www.svideo.com/6140036501g.html - this is supposed to support 5000 series cards.
Still nothing. So I'm convinced its software related.

You might need to DL the Realtek HD Audio driver or the ATI HDMI driver.
 
Weird that the 5970 doesn't have an HDMI port.
Regardless, definitely use the Realtek drivers for the ATI audio driver. The one ATI bundles is functional, but offers minimal customization and it's shaky at times. The Realtek driver gives you additional options like "room fill" instant on functionality and the like.
 
other thing is to make sure your using the top DVI port. i believe thats the one required for DVI to hdmi audio as well.
