Hey, I've got a gigabyte geforce fx 5900xt. I'm not going to be spending any more money on my computer until it can't run certain games. I've never overclocked a video card before, so I'm wondering what would be the best way to overclock it? Can I somehow flash the bios to 5950? What program should I use?

flash to 5950 i doubt it, and use nvidia's ocing tool. Also hope u have good heatsink for that video card.

I just have stock cooling. What sort of improvements could I get from oc'ing the thing? Better fps or what?

You could or could not get better frame-rates, depends on the card

Just down load coolbits from guru

I agree with the 5950U flash. I had a gainward 256mb 5900xt that I flashed to a 5950U, and it worked wonders. Went from 390/700 stock to 500/975 with the 5950U bios.Went from scoring about 5500 to 3dmark03 to just shy of 7000.

mine's just the 128mb one. How do you flash a video card bios? where do you get the bios from? if the 5950 is no good for my card, how about the 5900 ultra?

I had an FX5900XT and it was a massive overclocker using Coolbits. Never mind the flash, IMO.

My 5900xt can barely overlock. At stock cooling, the GPU can go up to 350 sure (Even 400) but the memory can only go up to 720. 722 and it starts throttling :(

How can you guys score so high?

I've got 512MB DDR ram, a 2200+AthlonXP, and an AsusA7V8X-X mobo. And i only score about 4600 on 3DMark03 :(

Tips please.

how do you know how far you can push the card? I'm a total noob in this regard.

wut videocard?

ya u should reserh as to weather or not u can flash ur card. then u gotta find the bios. get the tool. make a bootable floppy, and flash. BE SURE TO BACK UP UR BIOS. i flashed my 256mb 9800 into a 9800xt. works perfectly, then again i got a big ass p3 cooler on it, my grampa helped mill it out for me.

The best way to fanazzle a 5900xt is to confuse it ? lol
And depending on the card ! it's underclocking it ,then
uping the clock and memory ,while still retaing the nice
lower temps that those bios give .

Flashing bios is a must in this condition .

Go here and lern the way :Best thread on the whole planet about 5900XT's .
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?threadid=85394..

And the best bios are the underclocked ones (bare none) lol
http://home.arcor.de/redinferno/5900XT-BIOS/MOD-BIOS/sev5950u/595u4575.zip

But there's alot of good bios on that page .

Same one as the thread topic. 5900xt :(

well, that's the reason, my old 9800xt got 7.5k....but ur 5900xt is not a 9800xt hehe...so my old 9800xt or anyone else's > 5900xt :)

well, what I mean is the 9800xt is alot faster than ur 5900xt, which is why the score is higher hehe

Eva_Unit_0 was scoring 5500 at stock, that's almost 1k higher than mine :(

Oh sorry...the reason why mine scored much higher at stock is mine was a Gainward Golden Sample...it ran at 450/790 (I think) by default instead of 390/700. Plus it was actually made on a 5950U pcb...maybe that's why it flashed and oc'd so well. It was essentially a 5950U with slower ram and a different bios.
