my 5900 is moded to be a 5950 but its quite a toasty critter, im thinking on the zalman heat pipe but i believe the ram syncs are going to get in the way. my question is:
do the ram syncs on my graphics card actually do anything or is it like the heat spreaders people find/put on system memory where its not needed

Actually the RAM, when oc'ed, produces quite a large amount of heat, and you'll wish you had those RAM sinks back if you take them off. You can always go with a total card cooling solution like the vga silencer.

how is the vga silencer a total card cooling solution, it appears to only cool the core

"The surface area of the VGA silencer is huge with the fan shroud installed the cooler completely covers my 9800Pro."

Take a look at it. There wouldn't be any room to have RAM sinks, so the vga silencer, even if it only contacts the core, must cool the entire card (unless you can put sinks on the back).

if its that big the caps on my vid card will get in the way of installation =/ if i got this all wrong please enlighten me
also radeons do not need memory syncs

The Zalman will fit on a 5900 fine, sience the stock ramsink unit is on the front only.

I have a 5900 and had the stock ramsink on it, some slightly shorter Vantec ramsinks and finally OCZ solid coper BGA sinks, the latter two appared to be unecessary, never got any more out of the ram vs the stock sink module, though I would take off the stock module and replace the shitty white thermal pads with some decent thermal grease.

The caps shouldn't get in the way, as the silencer has a raised area that is designed to contact the core, but taller RAM sinks might get in the way. But usually if you have adequate air flow in your case it will make little difference.

already put arctic silver on the ram syncs so the zalman cooler will fit fine without removing the reference memory cooling? wich version of the zalman heat pipe should i get on that note

I put the zally on and had to take the sinks off. It wouldn't fit :(
But I added a cooler master 80 x80 fan to the side blowing over the card, runnin fine at 525/950
Don't think ram sinks make that much of a difference.

temps:

CPU 43 Gpu 35
MB 32
O and I did a lap dance on the gpu and Zally

im liking the look of the ZM80D-HP its dual heat piped and looks like they took memory cooling into consiteration when they designed the cooler and it even matches my case's color theme :p thanks everyone for your input

Wow, bit of misinformation going on here.

1) The VGA Silencer does NOT cool the memory on any video card, the heatsink is raised to clear capacitors and will only cool the core.

2) RAM sinks WILL FIT. My OCZ Copper BGA RAM sinks sneak right up underneath. Just install them first :)

Go ahead and get the dual heatpipe version, if you later get something else like a GT or X800pro or other faster card you can be pretty sure you can use it again, the newer cards run hotter than hell and that second heatpipe would come in handy.

And yeah, it'll fit fine with the referance sinks on there.

Edit, heres what the single pipe looks like on my 5900, dualpipe is actually little bigger, http://s91019022.onlinehome.us/images/new_puter_pics_4-26-2004/inside_clean_1.jpg

so i should get the dual heat piped version and save the memory syncs for a upgrade( reference syncs make zalmans look wimpy anyway)
on another note looks like having 128 mb of vid mem is a good thing since the rams only on one side hehe :p

your setup puzzles me... what are those pci cards and is that a wire going through a pci card  and why single channel configuration but you also got same case as me so i know EXACTLY how its going to look in mine :p

I honestly dont know which would be better, the stock ramsink module or the ones in Zalmans package, my best guess would be the Zalmans but who knows.

My new GT has 256 meg of memory but it is also all on one side, there just 32 meg moduels rather than the FX 5900's 16 meg modules.

In that particular pic, from the bottom up its, TV Tuner, Sound Card, Modem, the thing with the wire above the modem was a temporary fan controller, above that is a 2 port USB header.

It's a dual slot config on the card, if you look closely you can see the fact that the pci plate is all one unit that covers two PCI slots.

This particular motherboard doesn't loose a PCI slot when using a twin slot card like the 5900 was, it has 5 PCI slots, one open area, then slot 7 is the AGP slot.

my motherboard has same compensation and my card is a dual slot also, i think im going to save the sinks for when i break down and buy a new vid card til then im going to overclock it til it bleeds

Sorry, what I was tryin to tell him was that the silencer covers the entire card, not necessarily that it cools the entire card. And since RAM sinks come in many different sizes I wanted to let him know they might not fit.

Post some pics of your final setup so we can see what you did.
