5870m vs 5770

I just picked up a Asus G73JH off of craigslist for $400 because it had a bad USB port. Well I fixed the port and I want to give it to my son. He is using a Q8200 core2quad @ 2.8ghz with a 5770 and 4gb or ddr2 800mhz. Would this laptop be much of an upgrade ?

Also hows does the 5870m compare to the 5770 ?

The HD5870m can be thought of as nothing more than a power optimised downlocked HD5770. In the majority of scenrios it should perform around 80-85% of a HD5770.

Compared to the desktop in question the ouright gaming performance will be somewhat lower thanks to a combination of the slower GPU and overall slower CPU*

*The i7 720QM runs at a nominal 1.6Ghz with single core turbo to 2.8Ghz. In single threaded apps (where it can sustain turbo) it should be quicker than the Core 2 Quad, but in apps that are multi threaded its actual clock speed may end up nearer the 1.6Ghz base meaning despite its IPC advantage it will end up slower than the C2Q.

i7 720QM: 1.6GHz base/1.73GHz 4 cores/2.4GHz 2 cores/2.8GHz 1 core

that is what I saw listed in another forum so yeah 4 cores at 1.73 would not be all that fast.

Since you got it so cheap, sell it for a profit and the money to upgrade his system.
