some users have been inquiring about this so i thought i'd throw a few test together. using 4 games: crysis warhead, dark athena, batman arkham asylum, and resident evil 5, i pit the new 5870 against two 4890's in crossfire at 19x12. crysis and dark athena are play tests, while batman and resident evil 5 use their respective in-game benchmarks. i'm also using the same drivers for both 58xx and 48xx series cards; the amd recommended drivers for the 58xx series cards. in both scenarios, i'm forcing 16x aniso from catalyst as well as switching on adaptive anti aliasing (in the case of the 5870 super sampled). specs for the test system are as follows:
i7 920@3.6ghz
msi x58 platinum
6gb corsair 1600 8-8-8-24
vista 54 ultimate
crysis and riddick: 5870
in crysis using the 64bit executable i set all features to enthusiast while turning on 2x aa, and in riddick i used max in-game settings including high ambient occlusion (no aa).
re5 and batman: 5870
re5 was ran with max in-game settings including 8x aa, and batman with max in-game settings with 4x aa forced from catalyst.
crysis and riddick: 4890cf
same settings as the single 5870 test. notice both setups produce very similar performance in crysis, but the 48xx series cards seem to have a very hard time with dark athena. the high ambient occlusion setting is absolutely punishing on the previous gen ati cards.
re5 and batman: 4890cf
using the same settings from the 5870 test, these two games suggest that 4890cf can still be a formidable gaming platform.
