- Is there any difference in visual quality when under the Standard tab, the "Use Custom Settings" option is set to Performance instead of Quality?

When setting AA/AF to "app controlled" in the CCC, it's not possible to move the "Standard" tab slider to either Performance or Quality. It's automatically set to Performance.

When trying to set it to Quality by un-ticking the "Use Custom Settings" box, it then re-sets the AA/AF settings to not being app controlled, so there's no way to keep it on Quality when AA/AF are set to being app controlled.

Since that's the case, I wanted to know if that affects overall general visual quality.

Thanks.

Don't use the Standard window; it is only for people who never want to touch the AA, AAMode, AF, or other settings.

If you want to play with those settings at all, then it grays out the 'Standard' tab and checks the custom settings box. It has no effect on performance or quality at that point.

Just set what you want in the other tabs and game on.

Right, but what I'm saying is that I don't usually set anything in the CCC, so I choose "Let the Application Decide", which grays-out the slider under the "Standard" tab anyway. So it couldn't be available for just those who don't want to mess around with AA/AF etc., because if you choose to let the app decide, it's grayed-out.

It seems to only work (the slider) when you're actually manually setting AA/AF etc., in which case, I don't know if that means general visual quality is affected or not.

I'm not sure if it actually affects visual quality even when you set things manually and then set it to "Quality", which is the only time you can use the slider under "Standard" mode anyway. Seems to be some debate around about whether or not it really makes any difference.

The standard tab is just a set of pre-set settings for all of the other 3D options. It isn't any more complicated than that. If you are the type of person who wants more control over your options, just ignore the Standard tab and set what you want.

Balthazor is right, as to exactly what the quality vs performance slider does I'm not 100% sure, from memory I think it's basically to do with accuracy of rendering, lower precision is quicker but results in less accurate rendered images.

The best thing to do is try both and note the change in frame rates and change in image quality and see what you prefer the trade off to be, image quality or frame rate.

You can see what the quality/performance slider does by adjusting it, and then viewing the other tabs; for instance, when set to highest quality, AA is set to 4x, and AF to 16x.

Set the slider to the second highest quality setting and AA is set to 2x and AF to 8x.

With the slider at the highest performance setting it puts AA and AF both at 'application controlled.'

The slider is just a bunch of pre-sets for all of the other settings, for those not inclined to adjust anything else. If you want finer control, just ignore it.
