what temp range should my 5870 (single card) be when doing some heavy gaming?...I'm just not sure how high to turn up the video card fan...40% usually is where I can barely hear the fan but anything above and it starts to get noticable...idle temps usually are around 37...what's the max safe temps?

5870 temps when gaming

I ran my 5870 at 45% fan cycle and had gaming temps in the 65-68C range.
If you are using a single card, I'd download MSI Afterburner and set up a user defined fan profile for gaming adjusting the speed to you audio liking and keeping the temps around 70C.

90C is acceptable?...wow that seems high to me...so running the video card at 90C constantly won't harm the card?
no itis not. I get 52c max on air. I have a huge fan blowing air through an open techbench. 60c should be max.
On my 5870 I get about 68C during gaming at 42% fan speed. 50% fan speed can drop that down to about 60C, but fan noice starts to be noticeable at that point.
My idle temps are about 47C with 10.8 drivers. They used to be 37C with 10.3 drivers.

It's acceptable in that it's still under the thermal limits of the card. It's a bit higher than you'll get though, as the stock heatsink with the default fan profile will top out around 70-75c, with some variation depending on ambient temps and case airflow. With the fan at 40%, 60c(give or take a few degrees) is what I would expect.
Not acceptable to me mind you, I like to keep things below 70C at maximum load. but modern GPU's have often come from the factory with fan profiles that stabilize in the 80-90C range before the fan kicks up in speed (just enough to keep it there) VRM temps are often up in the 90-100C range and they're perfectly fine there. It's when they start exceeding 100C that bad things start to happen.
