Hey! I'm new here at HardForum and since I've done overclocking in the past, I know a bit about it. I recently picked up a reference Gigabyte 5870 for 130 bucks and I've been wanting to push it some...

I repasted the GPU and it has better temps now. So I thought about overclocking it a bit, but since I've done this on mostly nVidia GPUs, realistically what kind of overclock am I able to get on a reference card?
 
Without voltage tweaking, 950-970 on the core and 1275-1300 of the memory. If you use Afterburner and push the voltage up, 1Ghz on the core isn't unheard of.
 
I tried just doing a simple core overclock to 925 and 3DMark errored out. I use it as a quick stability tool, but maybe its not as simple as that?

That's what I usually do. Most people will tell you to just go play games and look for artifacting or other anomalies.
 
Well if the driver crashes on 3DMark, I assume a game will have the exact same result? :)

I could try raising voltage and getting somewhere with the core at least at 975, if that's not going to kill the GPU anytime soon.
 
Keep the voltage under 1.3v and the temps under 85c and you shouldn't have any issues burning out the card. But once you start raising the volts, you need to take manual control of the fan as the original fan curve isn't aggressive enough to keep up.

Is it a reference card or a custom card? If it's not a reference card, you can't modify the voltages in afterburner; you need sapphire trixx to do so. If you do have a reference card, go to options and unlock voltage control.
 
Also is there a way to make it so you can overclock higher? im at 900 an 1300 an i even turned the voltage down a hair. but the 900 an 1300 is as high as the sliders let me go.
