5870 fan speed problems

I did some checking due to some crashes in games like Age of Conan and Resident evil 5 my fan speed doesn't want to seem to scale up enough to allow the card running games without crashing.

Good example is the RE5 variable benchmark , as soon as i leave fan speed on default the whole thing shuts down rather soon (1600x1200 AA4x).
Once i put the fan to 100% speed the whole demo completed.

Is there a way to let the fan speed scale up faster as it is now without needing to manually alter it each time ?

Do you know how hot its getting? You can also install MSI afterburner and set your own fan curve up so you dont have to run it at 100%. Think I have mine idling around 10% and from 40 to 60 is 18% fan and then from there I shoot up to 90C with 50% fan then after 90C I make it shoot strait to 100% fan because it shouldnt hit that. Right now im getting high 70s for my max and hit 80C once in a while but rarely.

Nope i cant check it i would need a 2nd monitor setup to verify the gpu temp. while running the demo

Use MSI Afterburner and turn on the On screen display. Set it to show the temp. It will show the temp when running 3d apps. If you find its getting to hot.. go in and build a fan curve like mine and adjust to your needs. At stock clock you shouldn't be having any issues. If overclocked you need to add some fan to it.

okay , will try that nope just at stock speed not going to oc it either

Ok, mine hit around 86C stock fan control but my case is built to be quiet and doesn't have the best airflow. This should give you an idea.. if its climbing up over 90C I would think you have a cooling problem for sure.

Currently using a setup where i have around 50% fan speed at 50 degrees C. That seems to work now the demo played all the way to the end (variable).

When i was checking how well it scaled the automatic fan control would scale up from 21% to 23% when the gpu went from mid 40 to 50.

Shocking to say the least, that being said one of my videocard exhaust is covered by a metal bracket(on the end of the card).

Use GPU-Z to record all of the card data (temps, fan speed, volts, clock speeds) to a file, run your game/stress test/benchmarks, then look at the data (in the file) after, to see if everything looks good.

Over 90C, the 5870 will down clock (throttle) the GPU/Mem, so you definitely don't ever want to go above 90C. I found this out the hard way when I left the fan speed on 20% fixed, by accident....no harm done.

On my experience, on a well cooled case, for normal games I'm in the 70s, but for harder/demanding games, and if the home heat kicks on, the card can warm up into the lower 80s, and a few times into the mid 80's. The max fan speed under this stress/heat was about 35%.

The auto fan setting in the bios should prevent it from getting into the 90s, even in a poorly cooled case.
