5870 CF Vs. 6870 CF

The reviews I have seen actually show the 6870 CF ahead of the 5870 CF on many games. Otherwise they are neck to neck. I would go 6870 CF if you absolutely need it now. I don't think the 5870 $60-100 dollar premium is worth it. The 6870 CF almost makes the 5870 CF look broken IMO.

Do you need the card right at the moment? Otherwise I would wait for the 6900 series. A 6970 may just give the 6870 CF and 5870 CF a run for its money while being priced similarly or less. Looks like the release is the third week of November right now.

I think the HD6870s have a lot of room left for them in over clocking and performance with driver updates and over clocking tricks yet to be learned and shared.. Just too early to see the difference right now.

I think a better comparison for class would be HD6900 series.

Money wise it's clear to me that the HD6870 is a much better value than the HD5870.

I'm actually just trying to run FFXIV at its top so i dont think i'll need a 6970 for that. I might even think of a triple 6870 set up. Anyone done that yet?

I have to agree about waiting.. The recommendation of a 6970 should end up with about the same price & performance as a 6870 CF, but alot less long term issues since its a simpler setup & no worries about CF scaling.

there is no way a single 6970 is going to match the performance of the 6870's in crossfire.

most games are seeing a 1.9-2x scaling. 6870 CFX is just as fast as 5870 in CFX.

i don't think the 6970 is going to have double the performance of the 5870 or double the performance of the 6870.

in all likely hood the 6970 will be 30-40% faster than the 5870, and maybe 40-45% faster than the 6870

regardless right now 6870's in crossfire are better than the 5870's in crossfire except for a select few games. In all future games the 6870's will be faster, thanks to the improvements in tessellation.

the 6870 have less overclocking headroom then just about any card made. 5-6% on average without voltage modification and then about 10-15% with. and when they are overclocked with voltage modification the run very hot and quite loud. perhaps when some non reference cooled 6870 cards come out things will change a bit.

I've been seeing very very impressive 6850 oc results. I can't speak much for the 6870 though as I haven't read much into that one yet.
I say if you waited this long, wait a little longer for the 69xx's. Unless you need to buy now, 6850's in CF look bomb..
