My monitor is 1920x1200 resolution, would I see a significant performance increase with this upgrade? I have an opportunity to score on of these for $250.

I am thinking this would be a good incremental upgrade before I completely rebuild when Ivy bridge hits and I go to 120hz.

Thoughts?
 
Check your own 5870 frame rates first, anandtech is well known to have extremely low 5870 benchmark scores for some reason.

My own experience has my good'ol 5870 doing 3-8 (even more with my 1GHz oc) more fps on any given game I tried with comparable resolution & setup.

I think it will be a small upgrade, but the 2GB vram could help with a bit of eye candy.

FYI, I have a 5870 and 120Hz monitor and get ~90FPS playing CODMW3.

7870 is > 6970 and still in the same price ballpark. ;) 350$~ both have 2GB Vram, but 7870 is newer, faster, runs cooler, runs at less power. = The smarter choice! Unless there is some sale I haven't seen yet...You should see a solid 25 percent better FPS performance from your 5870 if you get a 7870 also. ;)

I have a 5870 and really my only complaint has been the lack of vRAM (1GB model) and the issue has only sprung up in BF3. I play on a single 1080p monitor so the extra ram isn't a necessity in other games (yet).

With a slight OC you can get that 5870 to 6970 levels of performance (minus tesselation), so the only real deciding factor would be whether you need the vRAM or not. The 7870 offers GTX580 levels of performance with a slight OC and 2GB vRAM at the same price range as a retail 6970. If I were buying a new GPU I'd probably opt to go with the 7870, but personally speaking I can't find a reason to dump my 5870 yet. I got it for $150 and it's been an absolute dream
 
Actually the 5870 speaks VOLUMES as to the engineering accomplishments it has done and how much graphics card performance have stagnated in the last 3+ years, people have been happy with very little incremental upgrades, if a 5870 is still competitive in terms of performance. An overclocked one can still even overtake 69xx/5xx performance.

Sadly, AMD has lost a lot, if not most, people responsible for creating it.
 
Totally not worth, especially if you're completely rebuilding in a month. On top of that, for 1080p 120Hz gamers, a GTX 680 is looking like the card if you're willing to spring for it.
