5870 = 4870x2 ????
Ok will a 5870 be bout as fast as a 4870x2 ??? this is a question not a statement , hence the questionmarks at the end..i really thought somebody would have picked up on that.
what r your thoughts

sorry bout that, my mistake, its late over here and i guess the sleeps getting to me :)

but as for thoughts, id be saying at the least the 5870 would equal a 4870 x2, but most likely it'll be more powerful, as id believe it wouldnt be really good on their part for not having it be more powerful than the previous generation :p

but then again, i havent really been following the coverage for the next generation that much, as im just waiting for september 10th to get all the facts :D

I think the tenth's going to be slideshows, alcohol and the start of a painful wait until the (embargo? NDA?) expires on the 2Xth and we get some more trusty numbers from various websites. I'm taking the realistic route and considering it a Nintendo E3 presentation, don't expect too much.

it wouldnt be bad for them unless the 5870X2 wasnt faster than the 4870X2.

if a single GPU card is as fast or faster than a dual gpu from prev gen. thats a 100% perf improvement. over the prev. gen

Indeed. Saying a single gpu card should be a fast as a recent dual gpu card is just...dumb. It would be amazing if it hit that mark.

The HD4870 was an excellent GPU. The HD 3870X2 wasn't all that great in my opinion. I wasn't surprised with the HD4870 being the better of the two.

Yeah, and i mean isnt this like a 9800gx2 vs. a GTX 280? The gtx 280 is about the same with the GX2, but some people prefer the 280 because its a single GPU and it uses less power/heat.

well I would not use that card as an example. the 9800GX2 was something nvidia throw together to beat the 3870X2. its famous for benchmarking well, but that didn't mean it provided a good level of game play. I would go so far as to say I would have forgone AA and used the 3870X2 over the 9800GX. (the 3870X2 had plenty of issues though) None of this applies to the current GTX295, I have not heard the complaints (haven't seen this card myself)

I would compare the 4870X2 with the GTX285 instead. and that argument is has been pounded to death.

First off many people get the wrong idea that a dual GPU solution is "twice" as fast, which is never the case, on average you're looking at a 60% increase in performance. You have to consider the overhead involved when delivering raw information to both GPU's and the software overhead balancing and breaking down the work load.

In fact, the more GPU's you add you're actually more or less getting diminishing returns. However, some people like the multi-GPU setups because it adds value to lower-mid tier cards, and you also have applications like Stream computing.

You won't know the actual peroformance of the next-gen cards till they are released, so saying that it's dumb to assume that it would be fast as a 4870x2 could be an inaccurate statement.

I'm sure we're all very excited about the next batch of cards, and I"m sure when the reviewers get their hands on it we'll all have more substantial data to work with! I hope it kicks some serious nVidia butt!!
