Taking the price difference into account is there truly a good reason to go 5870 instead of 5850 if you always game in 1920x1200?

It just depends on whether you think a + 10-15% performance increase (over the 5850) is worth the extra $100.

Higher frame rates....?
Yeah, I've often questioned the argument, "You don't need X card because you're only gaming at X resolution." Wouldn't the more demanding games enjoy higher frame rates and more eye candy with a more powerful card?

ATI 5850 is an excellent at 1920x1200 for only $259.99 and the 5870 is for at 2560x1600 res but it will cost ya $349.99.

Exactly and in my opinion it isn't. But it's all relative to your own personal value of money.

the excellent performance has me considering the 5850. i'd like the 5870x2 but for the price the 5850 might be the one :D

For me, 1920 at highest quality settings with AA is where the rubber meets the road and you can justify needing to purchase the single fastest gpu.

Sure, for most of the console ports you don't need it but every so often there is gonna be that game that can use the horsepower and I, for one, am glad to have it.

Is a GTX-285 good for 1900x1200? Yes. Is the 5850 faster than the GTX-285? Yes...

I'm looking at the HD 5850 for 1920 x 1200. It should be a decent improvement over the X1900XT.

heh me too, upgrading 1900xtx to 5850, god its been too long

i bought a 4850, but my gf hijacked it :p

My 5870 slays Resident Evil 5 at 1080p. Frames never drop below 80 in bechmarks so a 5850 is probably going to be good enough. Then again RE5 is not Crysis. Hehe. But yeah at that pixel rate, 5850 might be a better value. When you go for 3 monitorsx1 for Eyefinity then you might notice a difference between 5870 vs 5850. Then again 5850 CF for when you do go that high rez has serious performance as well. Tough choice. 5850 is value champ. 5870 is performance champ. GTX 285 is in no man's land.. until it sees major price cuts! That's how I look at it. :)
