Can't you unlock the cores on the 5850 to match the 5870 with a BIOS flash? I heard about this a while ago, just wanted to see if it was true and if anyone has had any success.
 
That is FUD. The extra shaders and such are simply not there on the 5850, or they've somehow been physically disabled.
It is reasonably possible that some 'failed' 5870 cores might have been later converted to 5850 cores but that doesn't really help you. Those faulty parts were disabled for a reason.
