now that the prices are roughly equal, which should i go for? i havent been following nvidia cards for the last year or 2 so i am slightly clueless about their real-life capabilities. pretty much strictly gaming. power usage and heat not a concern. also whether i go to a multi gpu set up or not in the future is not a concern. spex in sig. i want to get away from multi gpu for now.

If power and heat are not a concern, I would go 470, because its only downsides are power consumption and heat, performance wise it is fantastic bang for the buck.

Neither of those are going to be an upgrade over 5770 crossfire.

2x460 be better option or if CF is sucking at your end the GTX470 will give more consistent performance with the option to buy an second one later on if you need more GPU power as SLI scaling norm Far more consistent then Radeon Drivers when in CF/SLI (norm does not take 2-6 months to bring an fix out for the SLI camp)

even when i had my 9800GX2 SLI do not think i had any SLI issues my self (was more GPU Ram limited as they only had 512MB on them)

470 performs better but uses more heat and power consumption. It's really up to you. 470 is all around the better card. I greatly prefer and advise on the GTX 460 Superclocked 1gb version. It is 5% under the 5850 and is far under the price (I got mine for around 200ish)

i want to dump the 5770 cf. while it performs at least as well at my resolution (19x12) as a 5870, the crossfire is causing glitches in my games. ie tf2 randomly crashes to desktop and gets those infinite sound- loops, metro2033 crashes to desktop, etc. these problems go away when i use only one of the 5770s (either) or if i put in my old 9800gt sli cards. so it looks like a 460 or 470 for me. the gigabyte 470 is $250 free ship after 10% promo and $20 mir. thats pretty much cheaper than any 5850.

The 470 is an awesome card and the obvious choice. Actually there can be an argument made for taking a 470 over a 5870!

if your looking a t single card setup then the 5850. the 470 is not my pick of cards at all, I would (for myself) go with an OCed 460GTX first if you want to go green. better temps, power, and lots of OC headroom.

I disagree. Yes the 470 runs hotter but it also runs considerably faster and thats the whole point. Yes you can overclock a 460 and itll approach 470 performance but overclock a 470 and youve got almost the fastest single card available.

If you want to go green, get a 5770. If you want performance and have a budget of $300, a 5850 or 470 are the only choices.

if that was in reference to my post I meant "green team". I was arguing against the 470 due to its drawbacks and having the same playability in games (OP wants a single card solution.) as a 5850. and the 5850 does OC well. I however like the 460GTX quite well and you can buy them OCed nicely for much less then the 470 normally runs.

470 = better performance, but needs more cooling and a bigger PSU.
5850 = slightly slower, but very good thermal profile, can be near silent.
460 = cheapest, can be near silent, very close in performance to the 5850, good for a sli setup later.
6xxx = not out for another 2-3 months, beats the pants of the 470 and 5850....

Nice summary!

ordered the gigabyte 470 for $250. first nvidia card i have had since 9800gx2 quad sli.

There is no official 6xxxx results out, so how could that be determined? Just rumor mills as of now.

The 470 was a great choice! As your psu is there for further upgrades to sli later on.

The 470 is an awesome card and the obvious choice. Actually there can be an argument made for taking a 470 over a 5870!

The 5850 is the obvious choice. Same performance, no ridiculous heat and power consumption. Choice is even clearer when the 5850 is cheaper - which it usually is. But it sounds like the OP got a good deal on the 470, so whatever.

And no, there aren't any arguments for a 470 or a 5870 for a single card system, not for gaming anyway.

i dont really care about the heat and power usage. i am using a sniper now which has great ventilation, and i am getting my lanboy air sample in a couple days, and it has about 12 fans - all intake. so i went for the 470. got it this afternoon, and yes it is a bit toasty. 89c during tf2, 19x12 all max, 16x aa, 16x af, fan went up to 85%.

Its not same performance cause the 470 is usually faster. AnandTech benchmark for one. TomsHardware for another. Guru3D for a third.

In all these, the 470 is faster in most games. Dont get me wrong, Im not saying the 470 mops the floor with the 5850 just that at the end of the day, the 470 is the faster card.

Now the heat and power issue youre absolutely right but if you have a well ventilated case and beefy enough power supply, it shouldnt be an issue.

And the 5850 just recently started coming down in price. Last week, they were still $290 which is the same price as the 470's.

For the money there is. Go back and look at those benchmarks. The 470 really isnt that far off from a 5870 and pretty damn close in a lot of them. The 5870 is faster no doubt, but its also $100 more. If youre on a budget, the extra few frames youd get from the 5870 might not be worth the extra $100. Thats all I was saying.

Go look at [H]'s evals which use real gameplay - it's damn near dead even.

The 470 launched at $50 more than the 5850, and has generally cost more since then. The 470 dropped to 5850 prices because it had to - it just isn't worth any extra money unless you are going to SLI.

Then in that case there is no reason to buy the 480, either, which is only ~10% faster than a 5870, but $100 more (give or take). The difference between the 470 and the 5870 is much greater than 10%. Value starts dropping off at the high end. If you're on a budget, you don't buy high end in the first place.

Totally agree. If the 470 is $50 more, its not worth it but at the same price its the better card.

Totally agree again. There is no reason to buy a 480 as long as its $440 and the 5870 is $350.

Budget gamers arent on welfare. We just dont have a lot of play money and usually have to knock over a bunch of liquor stores to save up the money for our play pretties so we want the best value. Im a broke bitch gamer and almost have enough cash hid from the wife to get some upgrades and Im shopping in the $300 range. If the 5870 was a lot faster Id consider saving a little more for it but with the 470 nipping at its heels for $70 less, thatll likely be my pick unless the bottom falls out of the 5000 prices because of the upcoming 6000 line.

Bloop, if it works for your (and the deal that you got) its awesome. Dont let anyone say otherwise. Its a good card.

fan went up to 85%.

Personally though the 85% fan kills it for me unless its a really undervolted fan that is no more than 29 dB at max. I subscribe to the SilentPC way of thinking. (you can be [H]ard and Silent at the same time...) PCs should not be loud, period.

an OC'd 460 SLI setup would be wicked nice...

People that use headphones and/or have their pc in a room of the house where the noise doesn't matter beg to differ. There's many different pc setups to suit the myriad of needs of the masses.

wow, you must have missed the "personally" statement I made before stating my objections... for bloop, the card is good, as I also said in my statement. do you even understand the difference and understand that I was criticizing the card for personal reason, and not for bloop?

wait... did i just.....
Yes i just made a pointless response to your pointless statement.
Now look what you made me do!

I can't BELIEVE no has suggested the overclocking performance of the 470!! I've read many reviews on the 5850 and 470. The 5850 does respond as well as the 470 when it come to overclocking the video card. You get HUGH gains out of the 400 series. Yes, they are HOT, but just run a custom fan profile and you'll be fine.

I say go for the 470...

That's because the 5850 OCs very well, too. The 470 doesn't have an OC advantage, and unless you water cool it, it isn't going to OC well at all unless you crank the fan crazy high.

I stand corrected, I was thinking of something else. *insert foot*

Though a 460 still overclocks a like biznich and you could save at least $75
