Hi all, i'm interested in the idea of trying out crossfire.

I've currently got a 5850, and i game @ 1920x1200.

I don't play a ton of games, but i think i'll be purchasing Elder Scrolls: Skyrim when it comes out next month.

I would like to know if there'd be any hiccoughs adding an HD6950 and crossfiring them, or would i be better off finding a 5850 used somewhere?

Considering the cost-effectiveness of a 6950 ($160) i'm thinking it might be worth a shot.

What would be an expected FPS increase, 20% avg?

FWIW, i'm running an i7 @ 3.6ghz, and games are installed on an F120 SSD by corsair.

If i understood you right adding a higher end card to run in crossfire will only run as fast as your SLOWEST component..
 
I see I see. Forgot about that minor issue.

Sounds like a new single card would be more suitable in that case.

+1, you can't crossfire 5850s with 6950s. You're better off going with an HD6950, or if you can afford it, two of them (or two HD6870s if that's more manageable). One HD6950 from an HD5850 isn't going to net you significant gains, maybe 15% or so, unless Skyrim uses considerable tesselation.
 
To make the upgrade worth it in terms of performance, you either need to get at least a gtx 570/ 6970.
 
yeah, gtx570/6970 seems the minimum for an upgrade, as far as single card solutions go.

Is there anything concrete regarding the HD7000 series in terms of a release date yet?
 
Depends which HD7000 - the 28nm refresh of the HD6950/6970, otherwise known as the HD7850/7870 should be due around february, but you may not be able to actually buy them until march/april. The new higher-performance cards, the HD7950/7970 will be due around march/april time, but again, may not be available to consumers until may/june.
 
ahh yes, i meant the HD7900 series.

Man, that's a longer delay than I thought.

I guess i should wiat and see how Skyrim actually runs on my card before buying, but i'm guessing i'll go with whichever brand has better numbers in it, as it's the only game I see myself purchasing for the foreseeable future.
