5850 DOA? please help

Just wanted to start off by saying that this forum is awesome! I just recieved my xfx 5850 black edition from mwave.com. I bought the card to replace an xfx radeon 4890 which performed great. When I put the 5850 in, the computer will not boot (no bios boot screen or video output on the monitor, however I can see from the hard drive lights that windows is loading up just no video output from the graphics card). I do hear a series of about 4 loud beeps from the motherboard as soon as I boot up the computer with the 5850. I completely removed the 5850 and the mobo made the same noise, so i guess this means the my computer is not detecting that the 5850 is installed? The fan is working on the 5850 though and it does start off loud and then settle down as soon as I start the pc, just no video output. Do you guys think that my 5850 is dead on arrival or is there anything else you guys recommend I do? Anyone have experience returning things with mwave.com? I uninstalled the 5850 and the 4890 works fine.

Here are my system specs (please dont laugh):
amd athlon x2 4800+ dual core
asus a8n-32 sli deluxe mobo
2gb corsair memory
1 tb western digital hdd
680 watt thermaltake psu with 52 amps on the 12 volt rail

Well it's easy to find out, PULL IT OUT, PUT YOUR OLD CARD BACK IN!!
It probably took you longer to post this than to actually figure it out.
And it can't be your PSU because the 5850 consumes less than the 4890.
 
lol ^ to above, and I was about to say the same thing, just put back your old card and see if it works, usually when the fan slows down it usually means that the card is intialized when the fan spins down, I think it is detecting the card fine, I honestly doubt the card is doa, there is something else at play here. may be compatibility with your board as it seems that the board is one of the older chipsets, make sure you have the latest bios installed on the board.

I think your card would be severly bottlenecked with your system, and you might not end up seeing a whole lot increase over your 4890 when it comes to performance.

last not but least I hope you get it sorted out, however doa does happen, but I have not ever had a card doa, it is usually been other issues. sometimes it could be as much as card not sitting in the slot all the way.
 
Try clearing your CMOS. I had to when i put in my 5850's. I put back the same settings it had before and it has never given me a problem since. I dunno.......
 
Return the card and use the 300 or so to get a Phenom II setup. You're 4890 is still damn good, and you'll get more bang for your buck in doing so. I would bet you will not see an increase in framerates or IQ with the 5850.

i was about to say something similar but I didn't wanna sound over the top to the guy, I do believe that he will benefit more from a processor, ram and mobo upgrade than hd 5850 with that setup.

so I say again to the OP, take the 350 you spent and keep the hd 4890 for now and buy a cpu mobo and 4gb of ram with that money and wait a few months if you really wanna upgrade the graphics card, the hd 5850 should be selling for 200 bucks when nvidia comes out with their cards, and if you got another 300 bucks to spare just keep the card by all means so you can take full advantage of it, otherwise I say it is a waste with an athlon x2 dualcore processor.
 
Try another output on the card, could be just a bad output, though if that were the case, you should still RMA it.
 
Uninstall all ati software and drivers with your old card installed, run driver cleaner in safe mode, clear cmos, then install the 5850. I had the same problems going from a 4870 to a 4870x2.

wouldn't clear cmos just do it, i don't think he needs to uninstall the drivers if he gets nothing on the screen as it is still in boot up mode.

True, but extra precautions never hurt though.
 
Hey BravO))). Thanks for the suggestion. I tried clearing the cmos multiple times but no luck. I dont think the video card is bad, I think it might be some kind of incompatibility with my Asus A8N32-SLI motherboard. I think I am going to just return the 5850 for now and wait to build a new system in a few months. Thanks for all the suggestions though guys.
 
I had the exact same symptoms, as do many others at the AMD forums.

Try this - pull one stick or ram and try booting. Also try a DVI to VGA adapter. I have no fucking idea why it worked, but both of those repeatedly worked for me. Once I was in windows I updated my bios and now all is good with both sticks and the DVI output.
 
Make sure you have the latest motherboard bios as well. I'd even try a couple of older bioses if the new one doesn't work. Doesn't hurt to try.
