So im building my first computer system. or in the process of doing so.

And i cant seem to decide beteween The:

MSI GeForce GTX580 3GB Lightning Xtreme Edition. Or the Asus GTX 680.

They cost the same here where i am. and i know the 680 is said to be roughly 20'ish % faster than the 580. But the new driver mess concerns me. so i figured I'd check with the hardcore minds here on [H] to decide what to go for.

Thank you everyone in advance! :p

Same price? 680, and this should be the easiest decision you make as far as your system components go.

In fact, dual 580s or 680? STILL 680.

If you're considering a GTX580, look at some of the others that are $390 right now. No need in paying $500 for one. If you can afford $500 them definitely go for the 680. Its much faster and I'm a big believer that you should buy as much GPU muscle as you can afford.

My concern are the people talking about the card freezing at 700Mhz clock slowing down everything. i do believe that i read somewhere. that its a driver related issue ?.

The Specs of my computer is as follows:

Asus Maximus IV gene-z gen3 mobo.
Core i7 2600k cpu.
Hyper 212 evo CPU cooler.
2x4 Gig 1600Mhz G.skill Ripjawx.
Silverstone 750 strider 80+silver.
OCZ vertex 3 120gig ssd.

Just want the best possible GPU for my new system. but liek i said. really worried about the driver issues with the new drivers. or maybe ive read too much reviews? ><

Haven't heard of that, and haven't seen any mention of it in the GTX 680 threads here. You have any links to the discussion? Sounds like it may have been a one-off kind of thing.

I've been looking but now i actually cant seem to find those threads ><.. anyways. im glad you're saying you havent seen or heard anything about it :p makes me feel abit more safe

What is this driver mess? Not being facetious, actually curious. My 680 has performed without a hitch

I've been checking everywhere in my cookies and shit and i can for hte love of all that is good. not find it again ><.. i just remember i read somewhere that the new drivers were causing some people to freeze up sometimes. when the card downclocked to 700'ish Mhz.

but i cant find where it was :/ no idea wich site it was on :/ but im glad to hear that you guys arrent experiencing it. akes me feel abit more safe tbh. since this is the first time im building a computer. and only my second computer ever. (this one im on now is a prebuilt Acer pc ><... from like 2007 /facedesk) so im abit worried about getting the correct stuff now that'll last along time

honestly I could never justify spending the money for a 680.. that is insane. If you are spending 500 dollars on a GPU, you either need to get your priorities straight or you have too much money readily available to you -_-".

580 is totally worth it on the other hand a little bit more reasonable especially if you get one used, I'm looking at buying one for 300.

Or we choose to spend the money we do have on pursuits that interest us.

I just got a wicked deal on my EVGA 580 from a friend for $200.00 with lifetime warranty. I love my 580. I was going to go for a 680 but I could not pass up this deal. If you can find a 580 cheap I would snag one still a great card

That is your opinion. I make great money & I am a gamer & I buy what I need to max my games. You say anyone who spends 500.00 on a GPU needs to get there Priority Straight? Gaming & my PC are my priority & I love em both so thats what I spend my money on. Gaming & tech is what makes me happy

The 580 is still a great card, for 1080P and 1200P it still maxes out just about everything and I'm using a 580 in my backup rig with a 1920x1200 screen.

680 /thread

unless you can get the 580 for MUCH cheaper the 680 is better all around

+1

Why is $500 over the line and $300 isn't? That's a bit arbitrary don't you think? If someone is asking 580/680 they can afford it, otherwise the thread would likely be '560Ti now or wait for 670?' Anyway, that's your opinion, and that's cool, but I disagree and would suggest the OP go with the new tech in this case as long as they can afford it.

Tzantza, DONT buy the silverstone strider. yes, it is a very good psu but the fan is terrible!
i had a faulty fan when i first bought, rmaed it, got a completely new psu and the fan was still rattling. it is far from quiet.
read the reviews on newegg, a large number of people are having this issue, due to the fact that the striders were made with faulty fans.

go with this psu

I think this horse is already a bloody mess on the ground but I forget what kind of performance gains overclocking the 580 had. I've had mine at 100mhz overclocked since the week I bought it so I don't remember. Considering that 680 seems kind of weird to overclock this might close the gap a little bit if a much better deal could be found and if money was an issue.

At the same price I don't even know why the question was dignified with so many responses tho!

Return it. On GPU, get the 680. Don't even look at the 580!!!

is the silverstone psu's really that bad ? :(

as i said, i am currently using this silverstone psu.
the psu itself is good, but the fan is horrible.
i have a silverstone tj09 case, and i cant have the psu facing down, sucking air in from outside the case, because the rattling fan is louder than the other fans in my case.
so im stuck having it facing up, sucking in hot air from the graphics cards. and i can still hear the rattling.

read the reviews and see how many others are experiencing this same issue.
also, silverstone may have the worst customer service and rma process i have ever experienced.

This argument makes sense for the general population, but this is hardocp. We do things differently here. The latest and greatest stuff is generally not a good bang for the buck. Most of us regulars have a passion for leading edge technology that takes priority over value.
