5770's egg shell sux big time!!!

just received my his 5770 with the new egg shape cooler. plugged it in my system and fired it up. its performance was great. but i was shocked when i looked at the temperature. it was at 88~89C (91C max!:eek: room temp only 20C) after running about 20min heaven benchmark. i said wtf??? my diamond 5770's max temp was only about 58C in the same system (same room temp).

i immediately suspected the cooler was at fault. i tried re-seating the cooler but it didn't help. so i swapped the coolers of both of my cards (i took out the egg shell cover in the process). the result actually quite surprised me. the his cooler without the egg shell cooled even better than the diamond cooler. it brought down the max temp of the diamond card to 56C. while the his card with diamond cooler reached only 61C max. so i swapped the coolers back, leaving the egg shell cover off. my his card was down to 59C max! that's 32C difference here!!!:eek: i was totally stunned! i guess the cover is keeping the heat inside the cooler. how could the manufacturer made such a bad design?:rolleyes:

then i replaced the heatsink compound with AS5, the max temp was down another 1C to 58C. while idle temp was only 34C (it was 44C before taking off the cover). so i suggest all of you his 5770 owners with the egg shape cooler to take out the cover and see if you can make your card cooler or not. maybe other brand with the egg shape cooler are the same too. worth giving it a try too:D
 
I have two Sapphire 5770s with Egg coolers and they run 38c (ish) idle and 50c (ish) under load at stock settings using crossfire.

great to hear that. they might cool even better if you take off the covers:D
 
Does your eggshell have the 2 heatpipes?

I have had 3 x 5770's, asus cucore was absolutely terrible - talking high 80's @ 900 core and 2 x xfx v2 eggshell with the heatpipes which were great 1000 core around 60c.

yeah, mine has 2 heatpipes, and it's running at stock 850 core.

so you should try taking off the cover of your asus 5770's like i did;)
 
I have an XFX 5770 with the egg cooler and it stays in the high 30's at idle and I've never seen it get above 60+°C under heavy load. Something is up with your card.

you have a different brand, so the coolers under the eggshell are different. like e-geek said, his asus cards are also hitting high 80's with minor oc, while his xfx's (oc 100mhz more than his asus's) are only around the 60's.
 
Post some pictures of this as i like to see it. I would like to see it. Perhaps a good after market heatsink or water block.

Asus cucore has a in house asus designed hsf thats 11% better lol, it sux compared to the eggshell even when i remounted with as5, so im not sure what the issue was with your card (maybe case airflow?) because i havent touched the xfx cards and they run great temps.

Glad you fixed your issue though :)

well, the eggshell cover was the one causing the problem (at least my problem here). taking it off solved the problem, so i dont need to worry about it anymore. i'm just posting it here so that other people might try what i did as a possible solution if they have high temperature problem with their 5770 cards:D
 
Might just be that mount pressure was poor/misaligned and wasn't contacting properly the first time. The plastic cover certainly can't make a 30C+ difference if everything else is kept identical.

Agree. That heatsink with the cover off reminds me of one of those Zalman VFwhatever coolers. It actually looks pretty cool for a stock cooler.

Stevexyz I wonder if yours had defective heatpipes or something? That just seems weird that a cooler would suck that much. Especially when it looks so badass :p

I took the cover off my Sapphire 5750 which is clocked at 870/1400. There wasn't really much change at all, maybe 1 or 2 degrees less if I'm splitting hairs. Full load temps average 62, with peaks upto 65. Also, the card looks to have silver on the slug as well. I dunno if I should put it back on or just leave it off?
 
Certainly looks better without the plastic shell. The egg-shaped cooler is the most hideous thing to happen to video cards in a long time IMO.
