just bought a 5770 and wondering if it was right to give up a little performance for newer hardware.

In terms of overall performance, the 5770 is about equal to a 4870.

Don't think your really giving up any performance. But I would have paid the $20 more an gotten a 460 768mb instead.

since u already bought it (5770), just use it.

4870 is less efficient and loud although its slightly faster in some cases.

Would having 256MB less than an HD5770 1GB make a noticeable difference?

No, not unless you're gaming above 1920x1200 or so, but even then, these GPUs aren't going to have the power to push those resolutions with high IQ anyways. So it pretty much doesn't make a difference at all.
