Get the 5770. No reason to buy old tech unless you are getting a crazy good deal for it. Plus you'll have dx11 and eyefinity support. Even if you don't ever use them the card will have a higher value when you go to sell it.
 
I would go for a 4870 personally. I see XFX ones going for 100 shipped all the time used. I rarely see 5770 below 130 shipped. More like 150 most of the time. A new one is going to cost you between 40 to 70 dollars more then a 4870. While a 4870 performs better. Either go for a 4870 or make the dip for GTX 460 imo.

You can get a good deal on a GTX 460 here http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1532152. Many come with Just Cause 2 you could sell or keep even.
 
What's your price range? I would get the 460GTX if I were you. For $200 it's a great buy.
 
I was trying to keep it under or around $150. I see several 4870s slightly used on ebay for $115 or so or $140ish new...

Yeah that is what I was thinking.... is dx11 really worth it though? Seems like it takes forever, especially with most pc games being console ports, for direct x versions to take off.
 
get a gtx 460 for $200, sell just cause 2 for $25, and then you are only $25 over budget (which you can get back through BCB)

If power is a concern, the 5770 and GTX 460 should be your only choices. The TigerDirect 5770 deal above looks good to me.

I would vote for the 5770, if you can get it around the 130 price point, if you can get to the 170 range the 460 gtx looks good, but don't forget about the 5830... it is starting to hit this range as well.

I personally game at 1920X1200, and initially upgraded form a (8800gt to ) 4850 to a 5770 and let me say the difference in gaming was pretty noticeable, not to mention the heat output from the card was way lower. I finally have settled on a 5850 and couldn't be happier, got in a tiger direct 15% bcb deal for 250. I would imagine the 5770 should be a great upgrade over the 9600gt.

Now if you can score a 4870 1gb version (not the 512) for under a benjimin, like geeks.com had referb'd a couple weeks ago I thing you would be doing pretty good too. BTW there have been some deals on the Nvidia 250 gt lately under the $80 barrier as well.
 
I wouldn't pay $140 for a 4870 but I wouldn't trade mine for a 5770.
My 4870 has been a trooper. Runs nice and cool and handles everything I have thrown at it so far at my 22" 1680x1050.
 
There is an Asus 4870 Dark knight 1gb for $100 shipped on the forums right now, grab that and you're set.
 
The ASUS DK's are very quiet and OC about average but with a lot less noise and heat. You should pull no less than 800mhz on the GPU and 1ghz on the mem with stock volts and fan speed.
