Recently added a 2nd 5770 to my rig and all my games but one has seen massive performance gains, but of course that one has to be the game I play most often. Borderlands. For some reason the performance is the same in that game as it was with a single card which leads me to believe that either it doesn't support crossfire or it needs to be enabled for that game somehow.

I have searched google and forums for a few hours and still have no fix so if anyone has any idea what the issue the help would greatly be appreciated.

Do you the CFX logo on the top left? Make sure under your CCC properties you have check mark, show logo in CFX mode. Thats the best way to know if you are actually running in CFX.

Should be in the system tray applet for CCC under crossfire. Crossfire isn't really at it's best in Borderlands as a whole however.

A much better way to check is to download rivatuner or something that uses it's OSD (like MSI Afterburner) and have it display both gpu 0 and gpu 1 usage. The CFX logo works but this way you can actually make sure it's utilizing both gpu's. I don't remember having an issue with my 4870x2 in borderlands back when I played it so could just be a driver issue. Make sure you install the latest Catalyst App Profiles.

Logo shows up in borderlands guess the gains just aren't good in the particular title.

On a 5970 the only drivers that will let my brother in law play without crashing was a 10.4 . Might want to give those a shot.

Make sure you have the crossfire performance profiles installed too.

Even with them Borderlands has odd and inconsistent performance with crossfire, running smoothly at times and then the next moment dropping frames. Or at least it does with my dual 4890's, perfectly stable though.

Yea the gains are barley noticable to be honest, never had a stability issue though which is good.
I hope someday they improve performance for multi gpu setups but I doubt it.

Same. This happens in certain areas of the map, facing towards certain areas. These extreme frame drops happen in identical areas on most PC's I have seen.

Lance Hwy in the knoxx dlc has had the worst performance for me, i have had people tell me that ATi performance just isn't good in Borderlands.

Yeah, I play Borderlands with my 2x GTX 285s and some levels and effects just murder my framerate still. Most notably the whole Kroms Canyon area and a lot of the Knoxx DLC.

But I ran the in-game benchmark (forgot the path/command, found it on Google) and there was a significant performance increase from enabling SLI (min/max - 15/250ish vs 25/450ish), so there's definitely some scaling, but I guess not well enough for some areas. It seems lots of fire and other special effects really kill my frame rate. I tried disabling Dynamic Shadows and it made a considerable difference, but I still notice a lot of hiccups in some areas. I'm playing at 1920 x 1200 too.

I have a friend that plays on my other PC with 1 GTX 285, but at 1280 x 1024 and it's buttery smooth with all effects on and in every area. But I would hope so at that resolution, hah.

Yeah the game doesn't really love ATI (well, it's TWIMTBP after all). Even then, the game somehow gets 50-62fps at 1920*1200 on my 5870... till I enable AA. Then the game crawls like a snail in the Knoxx DLC. And that's despite using the new ATI drivers that improve AA performance.

Oh, I totally forgot about that, I have 4x AA forced in the control panel. I'm sure that's what's killing my FPS so much because Mark mentioned this issue in his Borderlands IQ test.

Are you trying to force AA too, OP? If so, I'm sure that's what causing it. I figured having an nvidia card and with several driver releases since the games launch, I would be able to run AA too, but I guess not (at least not smoothly).

But, as I said, I had my friend force AA through the control panel on my other rig too (GTX 285) and it's completely smooth, but I'm sure that's because he's only playing at 1280 x 1024.

It's not just FPS that it kills actually. In the main zone areas (the non-DLC ones), 2*SSAA was still giving me steady framerates but input delay went up quite a bit.

Also another note for those enabling AA in the game: MSAA doesn't antialias the cell shading effect making the AA effect near useless unless you edit the game config files to disable that.

Yeah, I noticed a little input lag as well when I enabled it too, but it wasn't drastic enough to affect gameplay.

I just read through that IQ performance test I linked above and it seems that AA isn't really worth enabling in this game no matter what method you use due to the cell shading effect and black borders around almost everything. So I guess I'll just disable AA and I'm sure my FPS will stay at 60 FPS. I have tripple buffered vsync forced in the control panel too to prevent tearing that was horrible on mine without it (I was getting ~400 FPS in some places).

I am not forcing AA but i have everything cranked to max@1920x1080, I see drops in kroms canyon when looking in certain areas but it never goes below 45fps. But in the lance hwy in Knoxx it bounces from 20-60dps and gets jittery. Funny thing is turning of things like dynamic shadows or lowering details doesn help much so I am thinking maybe it hates ati cards or drivers. The main game and other dlc's including other areas in knoxx play at a full 60 clip.

Its an odd one......

**NOTE: I have Vsync, motion blur and all the extras turned on in the ini.

CFAA and SSAA does work fine though, although it's virtually unplayable in the knoxx dlc areas with 10-30 fps and 50ms++ input delay for me (according to the hacked fps/ping counter I added)

I don't think I can force CFAA or SSAA with my GTX 285s though. At least, I don't see that option in the Nvidia control panel, I think that's only an option for you ATI guys.
