5770 cooling solutions?

Hello HF

I recently OC'ed my Q6600 from 2.4 to 3.2 thanks to a new heatsink and some help from you folks. I tried to put a small OC on my GPU via MSI Afterburner but it overheated with anything approaching a decent OC, even with a custom fan profile. (I was at about 890 core and 1290 memory and it was still overheating) Part of this is likely due to poor case airflow, but I have 2 new 120mm fans I will be replacing my old worn out ones (which spin pretty slow now) with to help with that.

So my question is how the devil do I set up some better cooling for an XFX 5770 itself? I've seen people claiming to have over 1ghz of core clock speed so there must be some sort of solution out there. I tried to do some looking on google but I had trouble finding anything too helpful. Lots of pictures of completed custom cooling setups but no guides or explanations.

Is it as easy as applying a CPU heatsink? All I had to do for that was dismount the mobo and add a bracket to the back of it, then toss the heatsink itself on top and add a fan, which was a breeze. (Wordplay!)
 
They make heatsinks specifically for GPUs not to mention ramsinks for the ram. This page should have many options for you to look at.

And yes getting the core up higher is possible, but not guaranteed. Mine personally will go 1100 core/1410 memory stable on 1.32V.

Can you clarify the distiction between GPU cooling and ramsinks? I'm assuming you are refering to the RAM on the 5770 and not my sytem memory, correct? And are there any makes/brands that are simply "better" than others for my card?

I'm happy to do my own reading on the subject if anyone has a good link or two, I've just had a tough time tracking down a really solid resource on the subject

edit: Oh, and I'm assuming GPU cooling isnt a "one size fits all" sort of thing but I have no idea how to tell if a given cooler will fit my card. How can I tell short of the product name including my model number?

My main concern is that my card seems fairly closed and I cant figure out how I would mount any cooling on there. My card looks like this

That is pretty much how everyone's looks more or less. You have to take that entire shroud off and remove the stock cooler.

As for finding a cooler for the GPU, most actually are a one size fits all kind of thing, but some are not. They will say in their descriptions what cards they fit. The 5770 simply has 4 holes (one in each corner from the GPU) that held the old cooler on. I have a watercooling setup on mine so I have a waterblock on my gpu and am not really familiar with aftermarket HS/F combos for the cards.

In regards to memory, simple copper ramsinks will do the job if you want them. In stock form, the ram on the backside of the card is just exposed (but the frontside are cooled by the big cooler/heatsink, go figure). The memory is only going to go as fast as the weakest link, so if there aren't heatsinks, odds are that weakest link is going to be on the backside of the card. I have these.

So just remove the casing and stock fan from the front and replace it with a custom cooling unit of my choice and then add ramsinks to the back, correct? Does the casing and stock fan come off pretty easily? A bit of reading on google turned up that most people use Thermal Silver adhesive to attach their ramsinks. Does that sound like the best way to go?

And as far as actual GPU coolers go is there one that people would suggest? I'm comfortable spending up to $60 or so. I have a Thermalright Venomous 120 for my CPU which I am very happy with, but I dont know a good GPU cooler from a hole in the ground.

its kinda a luck of the draw thing but I have the exact same XFX card you posted and I can run my card at 1050/1450 24/7 with 1.25v on the core. My 1450 on the ram is outstanding. I also have made no mods and am just using the stock cooler. Ive never seen temps over 76ºC and thats with the fan on auto which never gets it above 45-50%. If I turn the hairdryer to 100% fan speed temps stay in the lower 60'sºC

Wow, thats impressive. I was hitting 90 degrees with stock fan speeds at load! Dosnt leaving it at 100% kill your fan pretty fast?

Probably faster. I just leave it at auto now. Even after 2 hours of Crysis I never pass the mid 70's just on auto so Im ok with that
 
Gah, I cant seem to find a good solution for the 5770 :( It does not seem to be very widely supported by aftermarket VGA cooling.

This works but its an old model. Is it even worth my money? I cant seem to find anything that really revs my engine.
 
Maybe try an RMA XFX will take it back. Maybe you just got a dud. I just spent the past 3 hours playing Warhead at 1Ghz/1400Mhz with 1.2v
 
I dont see how I can get them to take a product back because I cant get it to run at ABOVE the specifications they list :p

I was more looking for suggestions on custom VGA coolers I can use on this card as the few I have managed to find look pretty outdated.
 
The Accelero S1 DOES fit but requires a bit of modification ... if memory serves, you have to cut some fins. Instructions here.
