I have 3 monitors all have DVI and VGA connections, 22 inch maximum resolution 1920x1080.

I am going to purchase a 5770 graphics card and would like to run eyefinity.

I have looked everywhere, read pages back watch numerous videos and I'm still confused.

I realise I need to use the displayport and the two DVI.

Would I be able to do it with this adapter? Startech DisplayPort to DVI Video Converter 24cm

If not then what do I need?

Sorry for the real novice question, and incidentally I am far from a novice but this is just confused me.

it best to use one from amd approved list see here. seeing that isn't on the list it probably won't work.

That doesn't look like an active adapter. Too small, and no extra power. I'd avoid.

ya youll have to run with the eye candy pretty low on that 5770 id get at least a 5850 or xfire 2 5770

You have 2 choices, the DisplayPort -> DVI adapter costs $100, or the DisplayPort->VGA adapter costs $20. If the DVI adapter doesn't cost ~$100 it's the wrong one, that simple. The VGA one works for a lot of people and should work well at 1920x1080, that would probably be the way you want to go since you are budgeting for a 5770.

I do 5760x1080 on a 5770 btw, it's doable but you do have to turn settings down somewhat low in a lot of newer games. BFBC2 I run at all medium settings and no AA. Less demanding games I can run at high settings and no AA, It works, but I do wish I had a 5850 or 5870, I just need a little more performance for the settings I'd like. I'd planned to Crossfire the 5770's but it seems Crossfire may not work exceptionally well with Eyefinity resolutions so I've been afraid to buy another 5770 instead of just reinvesting in a 5850/5870. At this point since I have the 5770 and it works well enough I'm gonna tough it out and see what the 6xxx brings though.

edit: Found this bench for 5770 at Eyefinity resolutions. http://widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/ATI_Radeon_5770_5750_-_Featured_Review_-_Page_3 It obviously fairs poorly with AA turned on like the graph shows but if you read the review it was easy to get very good fps by using 0xAA and 'High' instead of 'Max' in many games.

Thank you for the replies, I'm thinking of going for the VGA adapter.

With the 5850 be that much better?

I can't say for sure because I haven't played on a 5850. I know my 5770 at 960/1310 clock is just barely enough for it so OC is a must (thankfully 5770's OC great and you can go higher than 960 if you want). I'd take a look at these two benches:

There's a pretty good description of what effects need to be on/off to get the games playable on a 5770 or 5850 which might help you decide how much you need. I would suppose the 5770 is to Eyefinity what the 4670 and 9600GT are to normal gaming, an entry level budget card.

If you are on a tight budget it definitely works and I find the Eyefinity experience to be a bigger payoff than the eyecandy is when I drop it to single monitor and bump all the settings up.

I realise I'm going to have to turn the settings down, especially after reading what you have shown me.

I am limited to about £230 maximum that is to get both things.

It will be mainly flight Sims and driving games, because of my disability (paralysed with very little hand function I cannot really play first person games)

I suppose really if I want the eye candy I just turn off eyefinity.

does your motherboard support crossfire? If so that would be teh best option here for you.

Yes but that adapter is mini-DisplayPort to VGA so if you get that you would also need a DisplayPort->mini-DisplayPort adapter too:

For a straight DisplayPort->VGA adapter one of these should be fine:

http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/Display-Port-male-to-VGA-female-adapter.html

All DP->VGA adapters are active adapters by necessity so any of them should work. If you want to do more research on the DP->VGA adapter you should browse this thread at WSGF:
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=17468

One important thing is all of these active DP->DVI and DP->VGA adapters are very much hit or miss though. If you can buy the DP->VGA adapter from a nearby B&M store then I would do that instead of having one shipped to you because you may need to exchange it and paying for shipping sucks. There's a lot of reports of screen blanking issues that are resolved by just exchanging the adapter until you get one that works properly and I've seen people that have had to exchange twice to get one. :(

Looks good, that 5770 at £124 is a lot better deal than the 5830 too and I know I've seen people post saying the Startech adapter works.

Also forgot to mention that you can run your games at 4800x900 to recover some performance beyond just OC'ing the 5770.
