5750 overclocking in CF

So recently I've been trying to OC my stock sapphires that run at 700/1000 and even raising them to 750/1150.. Which is only 50 MHz on the core over the reference (not sure why sapphire downclocked the memory) causes a great amount of instability. My psu has 38amps across the 12v and also has a rail with dual 6 pin connectors I'm using for cards. Am I using the wrong rails? Do I need to use the included 12v to 6pin adapters on separate rails? Sorry if I have some misconceptions regarding the power supply, it's an area I'm just starting to research more. Thanks for any feed back!

If you give me the exact make and model of your power supply, I can help you. I had my 5750 up to 900 core. :)

edit: nevermind, I got it.
Combined +12V Rating 456 Watts

Its not your power supply, that thing has plenty of juice.

edit 2: try overclocking one card at a time and use MSI afterburner. Make sure you disable overdrive overclocking in you Catalyst control center, if you use 2 overclocking programs at the same time, they will conflict with each other and screw up your overclock

Ok thanks for the response. It's a sapphire and I tried using trixx but it also caused problems but overdrive was on so I'll try that soon as I get home(2hrs). I'll respond soon, thanks for helping!

Yea, it must be conflicting programs, Your cards should hit about 800 core at least, unless you got 2 poor cards. Try one card at a time, if one overclocks better than the other, you can overclock one card more than the other. At least you'll know your limits.

ok well i downloaded msi afterburner, and so far im only playing with the memory. As i stated earlier, the originial reference did 700/1150 from ATI and sapphire followed that for a while but recently (probably 6months) they switched to 700/1000 as their stock 5750 clocks. Im not sure why they did it. Maybe to make it more efficient and lower voltage? maybe the difference was small and they could use cheaper ram?

I cant seem to make afterburner clock the cards individually, atleast i cant find an option. at 700/1150 it passes 3dmark vantage. 700/1175 and i get repeated ATI driver reset problems? Think they might have used cheaper chips or lowered voltage??

At 700/1160 it froze during the cpu stress (3dmark vantage) test with the planes. And has frozen at this point on more than one occasion. not sure if freezing here points to any specific thing. Keep in mind my cards are xfired.

So what do you think it could be? bad 3dmark install? they are using cheaper ram? less voltage? could heat be an issue? or maybe back to my original thoughts...run them off different rails?

Are you able to adjust the voltage ?? Maybe sapphire lowered the voltage on their cards

oh another thing to add, before i xfired, i could run one card 830/1200 very stable...not sure if that helps.

increasing the clocks to 725/1150 caused another driver reset. these cards are seriously confusing me. Continous resets, freezing during the cpu stress test in 3dmark vantage. I just dont know what to attribute the low clock speeds to beside under volted cards(only in xfire bc i was fine ocing with a single card) or not enough power using the same rail.

UPDATE

I believe that something has to be up with the memory modules when in xfire. Perhaps one of the cards doesn't like being pushed north of 1150 from its 1000 stock settings. Currently benchmarking 13.5k in 3dmark vantage with the setup and now testing 765/1120

DO not overclock the memory at all with either card.

Just overclock the cores.
Did you unlock the voltage? I don't think you can with a 5750.

why no OC on the memory? No i didnt look into changing the voltage nor would I. Currently benchmarking 825/1125.

Ive hit the wall now at 870 on both cards, afterburner wont let me induce a higher clock speed. Is there a way to push further? Overclocking has yielded excellent results, i went from 12.6k in 3dmark to 14.3K, huge leap!!

yes there is, you have enable unofficial overclocking in the MSI program.

Give me a min to find the instructions.

You sometimes have to have administator privledges to save the new config file.

Good luck, let me know how high you get them.
My record is 912 core but my memory was kick ass I got it to 1350 or something like that.

With both cards at 870+ core you are just about at 5870 performance, just so you know.

edit: i also suggest you crank up the fan speed. :)

Awesome, and thanks for helping me out! I was Intially aiming to just have 5850 performance but to be near 5870 speeds is awesome!! I'm going to follow the instructions when I get off work and I'll make sure to post an update. Should I run something other than 3dmark vantage to test stability/performance?

I just play Crysis for a while at high settings..
You can download the demo and try that, if you dont own the game.

2 stock 5750's have performance = to or just above a 5850, depending on the game.

Well I followed the instructions in the linked thread but some of the terms such as "enable unofficial overclocking" didn't appear exactly as that in the Cfg file but as unofficial overclocking mode.... I set it to 1 and restarted after burner but nothing :(, I am happy with 5870 like performance tho, now it's more of how high can I go for benching. 870 seems to be stable and all my temps are in the low 70s on load

Well you did great, to be honest, you might not have gotten all that much more anyway.
Hey, its a hell of alot better than the 750 you were getting. Your cards are like 20% faster.
Good luck.

Ya i think im pretty close to my max anyway, especially since the cards are in xfire. I did decide to use MSI kombuster (furmark like) stress test and everything seems good but im not sure how long to let it run, i am plagued by top card temps reaching high 80's temps :(.

Set a more aggresive fan profile in Afterburner. Make the fans spin up sooner/faster and don't run that combuster crap, just use games and such , you will be fine. 80 is a little hot but not dangerously hot.

yea i set them up to 85 but it didn't make a difference and temps still touched 87-90's. I tested them out playing about an hour of assassins creed and they got to 77C for the top and 75 for the bottom. Those temps seem pretty reasonable considering its a xfired rig and that was with auto setting. I imagine if i pushed the fans to 75% and under actual gameplay like assassins creed id be in the low to mid 70's which is fairly avg i assume.
