5750 CF or 5850?

The benchmarks at TH claim the 5750 CF is faster than a single 5850. But getting two 5750's only cost $260, while a single 5850 costs $309.

Am I missing something? I don't know anything about crossfire, is there a big downside to it?

I'm trying to get a really good card to play on my 1080p monitor and feel so lost!

Update**
I'm def going to get a 5850, just need to pick one out.

5850 for sure. always get a single big card first then you can add an xfire later and you'll be way better off.

Yes, there is a bunch of garbage in Tom's Hardware's "Sum of FPS Benchmarks Totals". First, the tests are not all done in the same PC. Second, they assume that all FPS are equal, and that is most certainly not true.

That is not a reliable way of ranking cards, especially when mixing SLI or Crossfire results with single-GPU results. Notice in the list you linked to that the GTX 275 is rated as faster than a GTX 280; that is simply wrong. It's also a bit weird that the only multiple-card setups tested in the list are 5830 Crossfire and 5750 Crossfire.

Thanks for clarifying everyone, I'm going to get the 5850 then. Now I just need to pick one out.

I read reference is the way to go for overclocking, because it allows voltage control.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150491&Tpk=5850 xfx

I don't think this is reference, but I do want xfx for the warranty, and it's the only model I can find. I suppose OCing would void that anyway so it doesn't matter. I don't know why xfx has so many different versions of the 5850, and can't find any reviews on this particular model. Could this one be cheaper for them to make?

My concern is if it will cool as well as the full shroud version. I was thinking that the open heatsink design might allow for more case fan breeze to get in and better heat dissipation from within, but it's so much smaller than the other full shroud models I've seen I really don't know.

^ Thats a good choice, it includes free game, even if it is a crappy one.

And it shoudl cool even better than stock/the same as stock.

asus and msi will allow you to control voltage too.
Just got me asus yesterday and i'm at 950mhz 1.23
I think i can push it to 1k if i go 1.3v

the MSI hawks have probably the best stock cooling.

thanks. well you arent going to get all that a 5770 crossfire setup or even 5850 can give with that cpu at stock 2.8 speed. I would grab some more ram too as 2gb doesnt cut it in some games.

Its a toss up between which is more worthless: going multi gpu with mid range cards or the 'info' that Tom's spews all over the net ;)

You have a pretty monster board for that little bit of ram, add another couple gigs and oc/unlock that proc.

Yeah, I know 2gb of ram is less than ideal. I figure I'll try it out on 32 bit win7 and see how it goes and upgrade in the near future. I actually stole it from my brothers rig i made not long ago (from his 2x2gb set) to avoid making a ram purchase. I'm stretching my last dollar here.

About the CPU. Can you think of a better gaming cpu/gpu combo for $400?

If your budget is absolutely set in stone then Phenom II x4 965 BE + XFX Radeon 5830 for 385, if you can swing another 50 bucks into your budget then get this Phenom II x4 965 BE + Sapphire Radeon 5850. Its about a 65 dollar price difference & I Honestly couldn't say that its worth it for the 5850 combo since most quality 5830 will OC to 5850 performance & the 5830 in question is an XFX with there well known warranty.

Hey, dude don't bash Tom's.

They've been getting better, and thier fourms have this awsome function where if soemone posts in a thread you ahve posted in, it lists all those threads in the corner of the page, saves a lot of time.

EDIT:

LOL AT 5830 OCing to 5850 speeds!

Lawl!

The 5830 is stock clocked higher than the 5850.

The resons its such a turd is due to the fact that a crapload of shaders got locked.

You can OC the heck out of it, but it will still get anhilated by a 5850, wich has more OC headroom, better prefromace, and less power use.

i dont know where this myth about 5830 oc headroom comes from /

Really? does anyone think I'd get better fps from a worse card but better cpu?

The problem with overclocking a gpu or cpu is that you void your warranty, right? or is there a way to do without them knowing, god forbid a part fails?

XFX's warranty is only voided by physical damage IIRC, as their warranty policy is similar to that of EVGA's(which you can overclock, change the cooler, etc, as long as the card isnt physically damaged and has the stock cooler back on it when sent in for warranty).

if your CPU is the bottleneck it doesn't matter what card you have as it would be the limiting factor. thus if your CPU couldn't keep up with a 5770 throwing a 5970 in there would get you no better performance. What I tried to do was find the best middle ground within budget to get you both. As for the warranty I think Most GPU manufacturers now warranty OC cards as long as there is no Physical modification to the cards. & as Mentioned some even allow you to change the Cooler (like XFX & EVGA).

^this

I always believe in future proofing. Those 5750s will age much much faster than that 5850 will. Later down the road when the 5850 simply isn't cutting it, you can grab another for cheap and increase its longevity. You don't have that option with the 5750s.

Go with the 5850

No you wont because chances are later a single card will be out that can beat the 2 cards :D

its a shame that other then msi and gigabyte and some others, xfx seems to be using pretty crappy cooling units on their cards. These cards have been selling over original msrp for a while and It kinda makes me mad that company like xfx cheaps out on the heatsink design just to save cost, although from day one these cards have been profit makers. I still prefer the original cooler over the one in the above link. I would go with msi card personally they are not priced that high and have way better cooling, really high quality components. XFX seems to cutting corner on after market cooling and design.

As noted above, stay away from non-reference designs. My reference 5850 OCs to 935/1200 with a slight voltage adjustment and never has a problem with heat. Fan runs at 45% or lower.
