If your board doesn't support it, then get whatever's cheapest. They perform about the same in most benches, and there'd be no noticeable difference between the two.
 
I just tested a 650, it hit 4.0 on stock voltage 0.0 and it runs at 30-40deg idle which is alot cooler then the NON J 5xx
 
I would go a few steps lower and overclock. Get a 640 and some decent aftermarket cooling, cuz those Prescotts run HOT. But you should be able to get to 4GHz with little or no voltage increase.

I dunno with one of them crappy oem coolermasters running at 9v instead of 12v(fan)
i dont break 50 under full load =)
 
Well if you're hell bent on 3.8ghz chip then definitly go with the 670. But depending on your cooling you might be better off just going with something like 640/650 for more of a FSB oc. Plus I dunno if the J series has speedstep for sure and the 6 series does for sure which is definitly a plus unless of course your J series is an ES chip.

Cedar Mill and Presler will be out next month. They will overclock better than the 90nm.

Think: 250fsb x Default-Multi w/ stock voltages and stock heat-sink/fan.

of those 2 choices, go with the 670, as it will be N0 stepping and run cooler than the E0 stepping of the 570.

Personally, I'd go with a cheaper 6_0 chip and overclock though, as all the 600 series hit 4+ Ghz on air usually.

I should have stated that this processor will be used for a new machine I am building.

Cedar Mill will work with 925XE .Presler won't.
 
Well then I'm better off waiting for the P4 672. Cedar Mill runs a hell of a lot cooler under load then Prescott does. I'm sure I'll have an easier time reaching 5GHz with a Cedar Mill core then I would with a Prescott core.
