I am setting up an old pc for a freind and I can not get the modem to work. Running windows 98 in a p166 machine. I tried the set up wizard and have tried changing com ports but no dice. I cant get a dial tone. Been so long since I messed with a dial up modem I am rusty. Any ideas?

I'm going to make a guess and say it's probably a Winmodem? If it is then you probably need to get the manufacturers software to get it to work.

do you have another modem to try?

maybe an internal modem? (instal that and a nic, hook it up, do the updates, an drier downloads, take out your nic... eveything should be good)

Yeah like the above poster said you will probibly need the old software that came with it. Phone line modems are always a bitch, whenever someone needs to hook one up they have, I usually just urge them to grab a 10 dollar 56k winmodem new and that wayt he software and everything is with it.

I went and bought one last night. Gonna try loading it up and see where I get.
