Suprised nobody posted this; http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTk3

I agree with almost 100% of what was said. I REALLY like the game profiles, its something I hope ATi adopts very soon. Like the reviewer.. I dont like the brilinear filtering method. I should be able to choose what I want, not what they think is best for me. The good thing for me is, thats really my only grip. That, and I wish they would take a step forward in the quality dept. Not thats its horrid or anything, but better is, well, better. :)

Who woulda thought there would be a pop up blocker in video drivers? All in all, Im pretty happy with them.

It is ironic that a bug in a game with their logo "The way it's ment to be played" is keeping them from releasing it publically. :)

I ran those drivers for a couple of days, but realized the drivers were causing problems for me in Windows Explorer.

When I double-clicked a movie or audio file, about 50% of the time, the session of Explorer would freeze up for a minute or two, and the file wouldn't open. So I went back to the 53.03s and the problem is gone.

There hasn't been too many people complaining about the 56.56 drivers, but on my system I must have something turned on or off that the drivers do not like. I may install them onto my 2nd system and do some more testing.

Well, one more grip. Im not sure if its a driver issues, but it would seem to be. The lighting issue where lights just turn "on" and "off" in only a few feet of movement. Its very noticable in NFS and Farcry.

yep, that lighting problem has been present in NFS:U since the 52.16 drivers... it hasn't been fixed at all....

Some pics of what I am talking about. Taken with a 5900NU@5950 and 56.56 drivers. All quality set to the highest in game (cept AA) and in drivers also.

The rocks just in front of me are dark..
1.jpg

Walk one foot further, and BAM its like someone hit a light switch..
2.jpg

Look at the rock in the background to the right.. suddenly dark..
3.jpg

This time, just the opposite, lights on..
4.jpg

One foot further.. lights off..
5.jpg

Look to the right, towards the dock. That huge rock has the lights on..
6.jpg

Move a tad farther, and the lights are suddenly "off".. If someone is standing over there, its going to be hard to see them...

The trees in the distance look horrible, but that could be the game. It is a demo afterall, but on my 9800XT it doesnt look like that.

Thanks for the pics fallguy, I didn't realize it was also happening in other games.

I'll have to look at FarCry again.

I really wonder why this is happening, some peeps at B3D said it could possibly be an indication of running at a lower precision. But I don't know for sure, that is just a theory.

But the fact that it is happening in multiple games has to mean something, right?

Its just a little annoying problem, which will probably be fixed. But to be honest I cant believe its gone on this long. It may not seem like a issue to some people, but while playing the game, its very noticable, and can hinder gameplay. When fighting, you do a lot of "two step" or whatever you want to call it. Constantly going forward, backwards, and side stepping. When doing that, those rocks flicker a lot, and its annoying.

That's the Farcry demo with the newly released level.
I do not recall seeing the abrupt lighting changes on my 9800Pro in that area, though I will have to play around with it to get the right angle.

It's well known that Farcry forces shaders to PS1.1 on nvidia FX cards but allows for some PS2.0 (as well as PS1.1) shaders on the R3XX series. Perhaps the lighting artifacts are the ForceWare drivers trying to force lower than INT/FX16 (FX12; which would make no sense with a 5900 - only with the 5800, 5600 and 5200) precision?

I don't know if that would even result in lighting defects like this, but it certainly looks like such problems could be fixed with a new driver release.

Disappointing to see brilinear (still) forced on you even when you try to override :(

so nVidia drivers are having similar problems as ATi ones or what? can you link me to a thread where driver problems are listed for nVidia so I can slap it in my sticky?

"Brilinear" and the Lighting problem so far confirmed in NFS:U and FarCry are NVIDIA drivers only.

sorry i should have been more explicit.. I meant that as ATi has driver issues, does nVidia also have such issues.. I have been out of loop about nVidia and would like to direct users to a unified thread (if it exists) that lists possible driver bugs w/ nVidia drivers..

I have linked one thread which lists problems with ATi drivers in my sticky.. it is found here

It is helpful for users to know what problems they may have w/ their newly bought card!

amazing how things change....

different problems for different users.. usually 8500/9100/9200/9600 users had problems!

Well I could care less about the bilinear/trilinear filtering because it looks the same anyways. Game profiles sound absolutely amazing though. If UT2004 wasn't my main game of choice at the moment, I would install them.

No, some things don't change. In fact, the new ATI drivers wouldn't install at all when putting a radeon 9100 pci into my parents computer. I ended up having to install the omegas. I'm sorry, but there's no way I can see ATI drivers being better. Their shitty 20 tab layout is bad enough.

I actually prefer the tabs. I like having a seperate D3D and OpenGL tab. I like the new features of the 56.56's, but dislike how they are laid out.

Hey look, nVidia users have trouble too. Wow, that proved a lot.

Man I'm sorry but even with these new drivers the nvidia FX5900 and FX5950 looks absolutly bloody awful in FarCry compared to the radeon offerings.
And looking at them screen shots and these to http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10473&start=0
They must be reverting back to Ps1.1 for shore. If i was an nvdia owner i would be jumping up and down to get them to fix something in there At the very least :D
The tree's in the background look absolutly shocking:eek:

I'm also noticing the lighting problem on the Painkiller demo. It shows up on the knights when they are running towards you.

Thanks for letting us know, i'll have to check out that game too.

So far we've got:

NFS:U
FarCry
Painkiller

with the lighting problem

if anyone has found more please let me know, i will check it out

Actually, I notice all kinds of lighting problems with water in BF1942. It's only the water that seems to have a problem. It's really noticable when flying near a river, the river will flash between dark and light a few times a second. I'll see if I can't get some screenshots, or maybe a movie. I've got a 5900 non-pro, and this problem occurs with both the 53.03 and the 56.56 drivers.

I saw that flashing water problem in BF1942 also, while using the 56.56s, but the problem doesn't exist after I reverted back to the 53.03s. It never was a problem for me with the 53.03s. And I'm running a BFG 5900nu.

They didn't have to be perfect. They just had to install.

Now that I think about it, I believe you are correct, and I didn't have this problem with the 53.03 drivers.

Anyway, here's a couple screenshots of the bug with the 56.56 drivers (click for bigger). Notice that I didn't even move and the lighting changed. As I sat in that spot hitting the print screen key, the water kept flashing a couple times a second.

Thanks for the pictures JBark, that is exactly what I wanted to know.

I am making a list of games and what problems they have on what cards.
