55" TV Question

I'm looking to basically replace a 42in DLP Toshiba that we have, Most likely its going to be moved to the basement till the bulb dies.

Tiger direct has this guy for 950 shipped and a extra $5 off if you use Google checkout.

My basic question is, Is this a good deal? Basic requirements is that we want 50-55 inch with 120hz and at least 2 hdmi ports. LCD/LED doesn't matter. I don't tv shop at all and just want some opinions or suggestions on what to get. Around that $1k price mark but cheaper the better to a certain extent.

what is your use?
if not as a monitor, why not go for a plasma with far better image quality, blacks and viewing angles?

Mostly going to be used as a tv/movies and maybe console gaming every now and then. Plasma kind of scares me because of all the bad crap that I have heard about them in the past. Are they that much better now? I'm hoping to get 6 years out of it.

then plasma is the way to go, hands down! even budget plasmas offer image that high range lcds cannot due to their technology structure.

Plasma kind of scares me because of all the bad crap that I have heard about them in the past. Are they that much better now? I'm hoping to get 6 years out of it.

atm plasma's 12th gen and neo PDP panels are better than ever.
Image retention is almost non existent - in the Panasonic's that is, power consumption, much tamer, better viewing during daytime with less reflective glass.
At your budget I'd go for the Panasonic S20 either the 50 inch or the 54" one found in that site. Its worth it.
Or wait a month or so for new models coming out, and that would be the 50S30
