Me and my friend has built exactly the same system, and my cpu is only 47 degrees at idel and reaches 50s -60s after 1 or 2 hour of gaming but his is 55degrees at idle and reaches 70s-80s while gaming can you please explaing this.

It's very possible that his HSF is a POS, or the thermal paste is really bad. Might want to go buy some Arctic Silver and re-thermalize that thing.

I upgraded from a Celeron D to a PIV 530j last night. On first boot temps went straight to 74C and wouldn't come down, so obviously the HSF was not seated correectly. I took down the system and everything looked fine (using stock Intel HSF) so I loosened each leg of the Intel HSF and popped it down again. Still high temps, so this time I removed it, the TIM was still in great shape as it HAD NEVER MADE CONTACT with the CPU. So I started fiddling with the locking mechanisms and saw that one of the legs was not turned/lined up correctly for the locking mechanism to completely engage, I compared it to the other legs and made adjustments and now it seats perfectly. The results, idle at 39, load at 47. This was the first Intel stock HSF that I ever had to adjust in any way, but it is working perfectly.

I should also note that the new, stock Intel HSF is now shipping with a 9 blade fan and is signifigantly quieter than the 7 bade.

I just opened a few windows to cool the 530J I have. Interesting thing is that when I first started the machine the temps easily rose to 70 C, but now, after a week, the temps are down to 55Cish on idle, without windowage;-)

With open windows and really really cold air, I got ~40C on idle.

Yeah i heard of some case like my friend he built a 2.8 prescott the first few day it was running fairly hot but after a few day it runs alot cooler, i heard that some p4 cpu need a few day to adjust to the temp.

Yes it is within tolerance but not right, the 6xx series chips have the new stop commands so they will idle cooler, there is someting not right with his heatsink or thermal compound if he is idling that high.

Hmm yeah that what i told him, mine is idle at 45degrees so i am happy with that.

Wow, those temps from you guys seem kind of high to me.

My Aria has 3.2P4 and it idles around 30c.

55 degrees is just fine and well within tolerance.

In the firery pits of hell? I wouldn't allow my air cooled 500Mhz OC'ed P4 ever go beyond 40

Ontopic: Definitly reseat HSF, and make sure ur using right ammount of compound

Only if it is water cooled, otherwise I call B.S. (bull shat or bad sensor, you decide).

That is on an ASUS P4P800-VM mobo.
It has been very trust worthy with and (currently) without water cooling.

Thanks for sharing:)

I stand by my statement, no way a 3.2ghz PIV with a Prescott core in a case with as little airflow as the Aria is idling at 30c, so the sensor is reading low or you are trolling. There is no way a Prescott is that cool on air, thank you for sharing.

Who said anything about stock cooling.
I have modded my Aria with not one, but two 80mm Zalman Slimline fans on either side of the case and a Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu strapped to the top of my Presscott.

oops my bad it's 29c

That's because the TIM needs some time and hot-cold cycles to expand and fill in the microscopic valleys, especially the POS toothpaste(and processor ;)) that Intel gives you.

We are talking about running with stock coolers not after market.

LGA 775 procs yes? The stock coolers that come with these prescotts are some of the best intel have released, ever. Theres absolutly nothing wrong with them. Shouldnt need to replace them out of the box.

Agreed, the Socket 478 Intel coolers were passable for running at stock speeds, but the LGA775 coolers are impressive for stock. My Celeron D 2.66 came with a 7 blade fan that was kind of loud at ran at 2300RPM all the time, but the 530j came with a 9 blade fan that is really pretty quiet at runs around 1880 all the time.

Another genius heard from. The current Intel HSFs are shipping with a custom TIM that is remarkably close to ShinEtsu, which easily goes toe to toe with AS5 for overall performance. And even the worst TIM won't drop temps by 15-20 degrees after thermal break in.

Nice of you to leave out those details before...

Don't be mad...

You stated that there was no way that a Presscott could be that cool on air. I just showed you that it could be done, that's all.

And yes I do like sharing important info for others to go by.

Well..um they kinda gotta be considering how hot the prescott cores get.

Whatever, if you are going to interject with statements like that you should qualify them instead of wasting peoples time. Had you stated your cooling was that far from stock I would not have had any questions. And having owned an ATI 9100IGP based board I can say those temps are optimistic at best. With a Prescott core the information you are sharing goes grossly against a massive amount of information that even Intel doesn't support.

And having owned an ATI 9100IGP based board

Just to let you that the P4P800-VM is not an ATI 9100IGP board, it's an Intel 865 based board.

Far from stock cooling? I see many cases with one intake and one outgoing fan. I have had a water cooling setup in this same case. Just goes to show maybe that water cooling is a bit overrated...

Just to let you know that also have an BBA X800 flased to a PE as my graphics card of choice installed and a 74 gig Raptor. Seems like that would add to the overall heat inside the case aswell.

I must have just got lucky with my research and setup as a whole.

My bad on the motherboard, I had P4R800 stuck in my mind for some reason, which is the 9100IGP based board.
