540j or 3.0c

which is better for gameing? I love my Northy but I need to know the pros and cons. The 540j was free so its no loss if the 3.0 is better.
 
The 540 is 200mhz faster than the 3.0c ... so if you're not OCing thatll be the better chip. Aside from the fact it has newer technology in it, hence the J nomenclature.
 
THese processors wont even fit inthe same motherboard......

a 540j is going to be a E0 stepping Plus higher Multi... Definatly better.
 
I just built a couple of systems with the 540J in it and they run HOT. I've heard people talking about it before, but I really couldn't believe it until I experienced it myself. You could feel the room heating up when these things were running. I had a 3.0C that I ran at 3.5GHz. IMO, that was the best combination of performance and temp output.

yeah, i think this is the issue. Go with whichever you're set up for. Unpgrading to Socket T for the 540j (from the northwood) is not worth it if that's what you were asking.
 
Yes I know a sockT wont fit in a sock478. What I am wondering about is...heat, sse3, 1mb cache,oc potential.. are they worth switching? I will still have my Northy rig, should I pass it on to my son or pass the 540J.
 
What stepping isyour northwood? Do you overclock?

A 540j is most likely going to out-overclock a 3.0c

my 530j does 4Ghz easy.
 
Keep which ever OC's higher.

3.0C default vs 540 default will be about the same b/c of the Northwood's shorter pipe is faster, but the 540 has a slightly faster clock to make up for it. So at default its about dead even, though the prescott will probably crank more heat out as its power loss is greater.

Now once you overclock the 540 will probably go a little higher again, but might be offset by the Northwood's short pipe still.

All in all its really a toss up. Now if you had a 600 series... (N0 stepping) those crank up to 4.0-4.2Ghz easily and aren't quite as hot as the 500's. So it would be a little easier decision.

But with the 2 choices you have its a toss up. Personally, I'd probably stick to the Northwood. (like I am with my 2 sig'd rigs until something A LOT better comes along)
 
My beloved 3.0 is a D1 and the J is E0. The 3.0 does 3.6 rock stable on air @ 42c and is a 30 cap btw. I think I will keep it for myself, and give the J to my son.

I would do the same... I love my 3.2 Northies, and the 2.4c & 2.8c that preceded them.

Will hold tight till the A64 X2 4400 comes down in price, then may have to leave Intel for the better chip.

I would actually use the prescott, a higher overclock is (in the end) better
 
I personally can't deal with the heat output of the pressy (or I'd get a 3.2 EO & drop the multiplier/crank fsb). Either one of my 3.2's do 3.8+ on stock voltage and quiet cooling without making it feel like I'm sitting next to a furnace.

My 570J, once again, idles at 42 and loads at 55. No more or less than any Northy or AMD.

My comment was aimed squarely at the S478 Preshotts beacause they run a good bit hotter than northwoods at comparable clockspeeds for most folks. Right now I'm running 32c idle and 38c load at 3.8Ghz@1.55vcore using an XP-90c and quiet fan at 2500rpms. A friend's comparable rig that is correctly set up with an S478 Pressy runs 50c+ under load and 37c at idle using less vcore.

Our rooms temps are both in the 24c area.

I don't hate the pressy, only the heat.

Yonah = Socket 771 (not Socket T)

However.. Conroe is scheduled for mid-2006 and uses Socket 775 :)
