Hey i was crusing around on pricegrabber.com looking for a 7800GTX and I stumbled upon a Nvidia 6800GT 512mb, it was only $600. Whats with that? Is that normal? If its not a rip i think im gonna just save up a couple hundred. well get back to me

512mb is useless. they are just insanely expensive b/c the ram costs an assload. however games dont use more than 256, ever. Maybe in a year we'll have games that can use it, but nowhere near now.

Don't buy it, you can get a 7800GTX for a lot cheaper and it will be oodles better.

You won't really have to, but it wouldn't hurt. I have a gig in my current system, but I'm considering going with two for my next build (next summer most likely).

Where did you get your video card with 1gb of onboard ram?

thnx man, and by the way will i have to upgrade from 1gb anytime soon?

If you play alot of BF2 then yes, but otherwise no. BF2 is pretty much the only game in existance that actually shows improvements with 2 gigs over 1.

Anyway yes infact i do play aot of BF2 so i think im just going to get a 512 stick to tide me over for a while. By the way, do all your sticks of Ram have to run at the same clockspeed. i.e. I have two sticks of 512mb 200mhz in my machine and i want to purchase a stick of 512mb 400mhz. Is that ok?

Dont read [H] reviews huh? They say that Doom 3, Half Life 2, and BF2 all benefit from 512mb cards: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=ODA2LDE1

They are talking about system memory now.
They switched topics without saying they did.
There are no 1 GB cards.

You will have to upgrade from 1gig soon maybe, possibly because of BF2 or F.E.A.R. Then again at some places F.E.A.R needed to load stuff but that was because everything was turned up high.

Also when UT2k7 comes out or S.T.A.L.K.E.R you would possibly need 2 gigs.

You should read the whole article:

the article you quoted said:
There just simply isn’t a major benefit right now to owning a 512MB video card --especially on a slower model video card such as the X800.

These people who keep going on and on and on about 512mb cards give me gas  They'll be the same folks who are making eager noises about 1024mb <consumer level> cards 2-3 years before they exist.

you dont play everquest 1 or 2 do you...

As for 512MB in video, it really depends, but it's mosty not needed (right now.)

the only time it gives a noticable difference is if you are lacking in ram, the card can make up for it alittle. but its a much better idea to simply upgrade your ram and spend the rest on videocard, 2gb non value is like 250-300ish depending what brand you buy. that leaves enuff for a normal 6800gt. 2gb of ram and a 256mb 6800gt is better then just a 512mb 6800gt

512mb may be a nice adition to the top videocards later, but right now any 256mb current gen card will wtfpwn all 512mb last gen cards, and they cost less.

anyone that buys a 512mb card now is a sucker.

thanks for all the info, but right now im really curious ifI can put that 400mhz stick of 512mb in with my existing 200mhz 512mb sticks

on some motherboards you cant use 3 sticks of 512. I know, I got one that cant. See Sig.

you can only use two slots of double sided RAM in my board, 3 will not boot. Read your manual and find out BEFORE you order the RAM.

should be ok, but it will still only run at 200MHz. somethines though boards can have problems with it...

This is about video cards not ram. Please keep this on video cards or move it to the memory section.

Piss Off. If the OP wants to change the thread, who are you to tell him no?

It's his thread, he created it and he can do what he pleases with it within the rulez.

yea, 512mb video card ram is DEFINITELY NEVER worth anywhere near what they cost.

As for the extra 512mb normal RAM, here is how it is. Three sticks of ram can't run in dual channel, so you might see a performance drop if you are still actively using less than 1GB (if you go over, the performance will obviously be many times better b/c the hard drive page file won't be used).

What proc do you have? If it's a Rev. E A64 (socket 939) then you should be able to add a 1GB stick of the SAME KIND (except a 1GB version instead of 512mb) as your 512mb sticks and still get dual channel. Look at your motherboard manual though, to make sure you have the ram in the right channels (the 512s go in 1, the 1Gb in the other). What kind of ram do you have?

If you can't find it, it might be a good idea to wait and just get two completely new matching 1GB sticks when you absolutely need it. I recommend Crucial Value 1GB, they are very good OCers for the money (~$100-110).

And about the mhz. The speed ratings of ram is not much more than a reference. RAM ALWAYS runs at a speed relative to your own CPU, no matter what. In a typical Athlon 64 with a 200mhz FSB, "DDR400" (a.k.a. "400mhz"/"PC3200") will run at DDR400, or 200mhz (because it's double data rate ram, it's 400 mhz effectively, hence the naming reference). Most people around here refer to that as running the ram at 200mhz. If you have DDR200 that doent make much sense, since that would be REALLY old, I'm not even sure if they sell stuff that bad. So it's probably running at 200mhz, or DDR400. The stuff you are looking to buy, is it DDR400 or 800 (800 being 400mhz effective)? Because they don't sell that either, the only stuff that runs at 800mhz effective is DDR2, and you can't combine the two. In fact, at this time you can't use ANY DDR2 with an A64. So, if neither of those are true, you are probably looking at the same speed ram, so it's ok to buy that. Remember what I said about dual channel (it is about a 5-15% performance loss to use single channel instead of dual, look for a review about it or in the memory forum for more information).

If you really want a 512MB card, to be prepared for the future, just wait for the 7800 Ultra, I'm sure it will come in a 512MB version.

I wouldn't recommend that though, as others have said most games won't benefit enough from 512MB to justify the extra cost at least until the next-gen of vid. cards, the G80 and R580.

Thanks for all the info, and not to be mean, but you guys are saying the same thing over and over, (512mb is crap for the cost). Thanks I wont be purchasing one
