Why DOOM3 requires such a card? and why 2GB system RAM is required for ultimate setting?

Seems like a lot of us, owning "older" systems, wouldn't experience DOOM3 the way it has meant to be played :(

If there weren't games like Doom 3, that pushed technology forward, we would still be playing Pong.

Hope that this answers your question.

thats true, another thing is, it give us guys who get the top stuff, to actually use it.

IIRC they made it 512mb only because it ran like crap on todays current graphics cards (im mean it's totally uncompressed goodness)

Doom 3 only "requires" 2GB when playing at Ultra settings on a 256mb card. Truth is, you could play at Ultra settings with 1GB and a 256mb card, but you may run into occasional "hitching". I don't think there is really enough difference between Ultra and High settings to worry about it.

why? why not? their "high" setting uses the very best technology from today's graphics industry. the "ultra" setting does the same, without compressing your textures. basically, they didn't 'up their standards' so much as they 'unlocked' a setting that everyone else doesn't let you access. the key thing to keep in mind is that they don't 'require' you to play with ultra setting, and that the game has been reported to look, feel, and run great at min spec settings for low end computers.

edit: and my only problem now is that they need to release the "BFG 6800 Ultra OC PCIe 512MB" card so I can buy it. Or would they call it a 6850?

We can play Doom 3 the way it was meant to be played, but one should understand that the game (and more importantly the engine) represents a big jump forward in game technology. Obviously, 512mb cards that come down the line next year will perform better in Doom 3 and will likely give access to all the eye candy at high levels... but this engine is going to be around for years and will continue to be tweaked .... adding more image enhancement... putting stress on the next several generations of video cards.... that doesn't mean that you shouldn't plop down money for a current gen card or even a slightly older card. The video card buying process is a waiting game, but you can't wait forever.

Look at it this way - Quake III came out several years ago. It ran well on hardware at the time (high end was probably a GeForce DDR). Fast forward to today. Call of Dury is a new game based on the 'old' Quake III tech, but vastly enhanced. A GeForce DDR will run Call of Duty, but will certainly not yield the best performance. Just imagine how the Doom 3 engine will look and play in a few years... now that's crazy.

Would you prefer games that use nothing but sprites and 16 colors?
