Hi guys.

A while back I read an article someplace that both ATI and nVidia were possibly going to have 512MB cards out by October of 2004. Well obviously that has passed, but does anyone know when these cards are likely to hit the shelves?

Or does anyone know when the new "series" of cards will come out, even if they're not 512MB.

Thank you in advance!

Jnick

I doubt we'll be seeing 512mb consumer cards anytime soon, due to the constant shortage of DDR3 memory. I'm not sure about the next series though, I was thinking they would be out before christmas, but theres only 1.5 months left, so now I doubt it.

We dont need 512 yet, the cards that can use that much ram require such quick ram and that quick ram is already at such a shortage that ATI and NV have hard times pumping out cards with only 256 megs of ram of the quickest stuff they can afford. So yes we'll probably get them in the next wave of cards, before the summer/during the summer of '05.

That DDR3 shortage is bull, look how much x800/6800 cards we have out. They are everywhere sporting DDR3. We don't have a need for the ram. When one company starts getting there ass whooped, and games require it they will probably sport that as a new feature. I give it another 8 months to a year max.

well.. if you read the 'read me' of the newest nvidia drives they support cards that have 512 meg of ram.

and nvidia's fall refresh usually hits stores in feb... so really its just a matter of when nvidia wants cards to have 512.

really i doubt it will happen untill feburary. b/c if they do it b4 they will canablize there old products such as the 128 and 256 meg cards.

but feburary is a big maybe.

depends on ram prices and supply as well.
but if ati or vice versa nvidia were to do it.. then the other would have to follow..

but i doubt Either one want that right now b/c it would hurt margins.
and trust me.. nvidia / ati are making some hefty margins at 500 bucks a pop on some cards.

Quadros need lots of RAM, and they don't sell too many of those to have shortage issues.
