512 ram, is it worth overclocking?

i'm running an older system, think its in my sig, which i got a while back. i bought it thinking if i ever wanted to, i could go ahead and overclock it a bit and stretch it out. now the only game i play that taxes my system is CS:S (i play hl2 and d3 a bit but not much) which runs smoothly, but i was wondering if you think i could bump up performance by turning up the processor a bit. i ask this because my ram is relatively low and my video card a little old.

i don't care about bench scores or whatnot, just stability first and performance 2nd, thanks for any input.
 
That's a good motherboard for overclocking, most 9800 Pro's have a bit of headroom, that CPU is in general pretty overclockeable, and you've got the CPU cooler.

I say go for it. Try to bump the FSB up to 200 mhz first of all, then I bet you can get your CPU to 2800+ or 3000+ levels. Beyond that, give the 9800 Pro a few bumps as well (testing all along of course). Make sure you check your stability with Prime95 or 3dMark, and in addition watch over your stuff if you don't have AC, it is summer after all... :cool:
 
I have a mobile 2500 barton that runs @ 2.4 on a a7n8x dlx rev 1.04...damn mobo hold it back..it can do ~2.6 on a lan party board. I say start bumping that fsb up.
 
OCing should enhance performance no matter how much RAM you have.

Tips for running nf2 systems :

Run in synchronous mode (RAM and CPU at same speed) instead of "by SPD"

A tRas of 11 is preferable, but only at 200fsb and above. Something about freq. matching
and the nf2 chipset.

I have the EXACT same system as you. But Im just running a SLK-800 and 1GB of ram. If I where you Id first pick up an extra stick of 512mb pc2700 or pc3200 ram. That can be had for less than $40. If you get pc2700 just overclcoked it from 333Mhz to 400. If you get 3200 ram, just keep it at 3200.

Next OC the CPU. On that board you shouldnt have to go any higher than 1.7 volts for a good OC. That heatsink will take you there.

Im currently running my comp 11x200 since my barton is unlocked, is yours? So the ram is at ddr 400/pc3200 and the multiplier is at 11. The cas setting on my ram are lose and I find that it makes little diffrence from when they are tight. And running lose I gain stability.

As far as the 9800pro goes, dont bother over clocking it. Lets say that you mod it to a XT or even hit XT speeds without a mod. You will be gaining 5FPS max. Which IMO isnt worth the added heat and possibly stability issues.
 
Its not gauranteed that it will be a good overclocker, I suggest using small incremental steps such as 5 or 10 mhz fsb at a time, making sure to keep your memory speed in check too (try 1:1ratio with fsb). You might try changing the multiplier on your barton, if its an older core it may be unlocked. That will make overclocking it a breeze. And You would be well served in overclocking your 9800pro, I noticed definite improvements in fps (more than 5fps) when I overclocked my 9800pro. You will , no matter what, probably still be held back by your cpu even if you get over 2.2ghz, but it will be better than how it runs now. You certainly have the right setup for it.
 
thanks for the input. my barton is locked, unfortunately. a while back i remember bumping up my fsb i think it was (i'm very new) and got some stability issues when playing games. i'll pay more attention this time to the ratios and running in sync mode. it'll be a couple of weeks before i get back to my computer (vacation).

any more ideas? is upgrading the ram worth it? keep in mind i don't game too much on my pc anymore
 
If you play games like battlefield 1942, battlefield 2 and possibly hl2, 1 GB does help the loading times a LOT!!!

Same with BIG applications like Adobe Photoshop and most of the video editing apps.

If you do none of the above then 512 should be fine.

BTW I recently reset my bios settings and played the normal run of games that I normally do, and running at stock 2500+ was just terrible. If I wasn’t able to OC to 3200+ I'd buy a new rig.
 
right now the only problem i have w/ cs:s is if i ever alt-tab out.

the biggest reason i'm wanting to overclock is actually because i feel like i'm wasting money which i spent on a machine w/ the intention of o/c, but i'm not going to overclock at the cost of stability. anyhow i'll give your suggestions a shot, thanks

thats because you dont have hyperthreading or smp

the funny part is i used to have a 2600 mobile running on a dfi lanparty at 2.6 ghz on air ona 5950 ultra preformance was good but it was clearly cpu limited, upgrading to p4c back when i still had that card gave me 'free' 20-30 fps
 
unfortunately i don't have the money to upgrade my cpu atm. the best i could do is buy RAM if i really need it, and i feel like i don't. i usually play cs:s at around 50-60 fps so its not laggy or choppy.
 
yea its not the cpus fault, it performs real nice for what it is the problem is that it cant switch tasks quickly, and when it does it needs to make the other app slower in sacrifice for the app your trying to use
 
No its not worth oc'ing 512mb you should get 32 mb and oc that to get better results :) lol stupid reply for stupid question go figure 2+2=6 or is that 4 ? oh well who cares I dont know the difference.

if you have an older NF2board, but I think your good as the ABit was a late bloomer in the NF2 days..My NF2 does not even run 200 FSB untill I replace the NB HS and here it is maxd out without voltage mods.

I'd go for it overclock was easier back then than it is now if you have the right CPU.

I need another stick of ram also but it is recomended yuou get a matching stick for NF2.

I can't find another stick because I have a Rev1.0 stick of PC 3200C2, Corsair can't match me with a new stick....
