I believe I read in a few articles that nVidia and ATi would release 512 DDR versions of their upcoming video cards. Can anyone shed some light into this? When would they be released?

I'm buying one video card...I want the fastest one with the most memory. My old video card was the Ti 4600...I don't upgraded cards seasonally so I would like to treat myself to the best.

512?!??! GFG thats alot....why on earth would you need all that???

Prolong the life of the stuff I buy...that's why. In my experience I haven't needed a new video card until now. When the first 128 DDR card came out I also bought that one. Back then I'm sure people thought the same thing: that 128 was too much.

prolly....but still.....thats alot....thats as much as my second computer has.....
lol i dont even have that much ram in my main computer and the ram on the card is faster as well.

It is time for an upgrade. Infact I have already updated and new mobo and ram is coming. I'll still have 256mb though :D

Man, I don't think there is any way you can utilize all that RAM anyways. You would have to be running games at 1600x1200 with all the bells and whistles turned on. By that time, most CPU's would be your limiting factor. I got a 4600 too, and I'm looking at the 9800 pros (9800XT if I can find a deal) for my next upgrade.

My guess is the next varient of the current graphic cores (nv45/r480) will have 512, prob be pci-e only as well. I though I read q4-04 for realease on those cards.

That sounds about right PCIe would be the only thing that could carry all that data without getting maxed out.

how much ram u getting now? and what speed? also did u only upgrade yer mobo and ram?
Yeh thats all i upgraded. I have a tight budget so i got a p4p800 deluxe and geil 256mb ddr400 high performance ram. You think i'll hit 10k in 3dmark 2001?

You hit it right on the spot. I plan on playing at 1600 x 1200 with all settings maxed.

CPU should be fine. 3200+ w/ 1 gig Corsair DDR (2,3,2,6).

I'm putting together a watercooling set up as we speak.

Shouldn't make a diff at 1600x1200 max settings. D3 would be completely GPU bound, CPU really won't factor into it anymore. We'll know more when Brent/Kyle post their CPU scaling article sometime this week.

No game is completely GPU bound. Saying the CPU won't really factor doesn't make much sense either. If that were the case, everyone and their grandmother could run D3 on their computers if they had a good enough video card, even if there CPU were some ancient 400 mhz Pentium.

true, but generally if you're running @ 1600x1200 then you are going to be gpu bound. i read a cpu scaling article comparing various AMD systems from a AXP 2400+ on up through A64 3400+, using the X800 card and the 9800XT. in almost every test once the resolution was cranked up to 1600x1200 the fps was pretty consistent throughout the cpu scale, and the only major variation was in comparing the graphics cards. simply, the 2400+ achieved nearly the same fps as the 3400+ with a given graphics card, but as expected the difference between the graphics cards were very noticable. so for the most part we are gpu bound. i'd wager to say that we'll need another 2-3 revisions, or 1-2 generations, of graphics cards before the cpu really starts to hinder performance @ 1600x1200 w/ 4xaa & 16xaf

I see that you've read the same article that I have. The XP 2800+ was performing on par with the A64 3400+ and the XP 2400+ was only .3 frames behind it. OCing you CPU isn't going to net you any real FPS benefits in Doom. But look on the bright side, you can edit your pr0n faster. ;)

Well one day we will be using 512MB of ram. Games like Doom III, Half-Life 2 and anything that comes out after those two based on those engines will need that and possibly more.

The Unreal Engine 3.0 based games won't even run that great on a 256MB Geforce 6800 Ultra. So again theres nothing wrong with buying top end equipment if you have the money.

Not all of us would. But hey if you can why not?

I know I'd have a Pentium 4 EE or a Athlon FX-53 if I could afford it. So a 512MB or more Geforce 6 series card or X800XT-PE 512MB would be fine with me too.

My guess is though that we won't see those things out until GDDR3 memory comes down in price and isn't in such short supply. Before then I don't think we'll actually see cards equipped like that.

So probably around the end of the year or so at the earliest.

i'm not so worried about being able to edit my p0rn faster anymore since i lost my high-speed net connection when i got deployed, but yeah it never really hurts to have a faster processor.

i'm not sure i'd buy into the theory that we'd all buy the best if we could afford it, in my case i can afford that stuff but i didn't go that route. i have an A64 3400+ on the way, not because i can't afford the 3700+ or fx-53, but because it's not worth the price jump for the performance. i try to stick with the price break while still going high-end, which is why i have a 128mb vid card instead of 256. i find that i still have to shoot for high-end parts or else i get upset and spend the money again anyway. i learned that a long time ago, but didn't carry through with it so that's why i'm upgrading again. last summer i decided to put together a small system to take around with me, so i slapped together an axp 2500+ shuttle. well at the time i was using a 2.4b p4 system oc'd to 2.7, so it wasn't really an upgrade. now i'm sitting around thinking man i should've just went for the best i could've had at the time, because now i'm upgrading again anyway. still, there's plenty good reason not to spend an extra 300-400 for 3 fps.

having said all that, i am still of the opinion that having a faster processor cannot hurt anything. we're still a ways away from seeing vid cards that need faster processors. an axp2100+ or better, or 2.0ghz or better (p4) should be good for a while yet.

512MB cards sould be out by next spring, ATI and Nvidia might be waiting on costs for GDDR3.
Am I correct that more ram helps with AA/AF at higher resolutions? i.e. 16x12

Agreed, I upgraded my xp2000 to a 2500 (which I then oced to 3200) a month ago, and I hardly notice any real difference (ut2003 botmatch went from ~60 to ~80). It's there, but it's not dramatical by any means.

However, I *did* finally upgrade to a ddr platform from sdram about 6 months ago and THAT made a dramatic difference. Even on a xp2000. It actually made my unreal2 engined games playable.

I'm running a 9500pro@325/300 by the way. It's good to know my next upgrade will actually make a difference.

By games that won't run that great, you mean games at 1600x1200 with everything at highest/full.

That's nice and all, but they won't make games that the general public can't run/play. Forcing the general public to upgrade their video card to minimum specs or mid specs just to run a game is rediculous if 1/2 the PC gaming population has to upgrade their cards. I seriously, seriously doubt the new games that are gonna be based on the DOOM3/Unreal 3.0 engines will require say a 9800pro as a minimum standard for a video card. I'd say a 9600series card would be the minimum specs card for games which are coming in the next year or more.

As for the extra 256MB Video memory, it only helps rendering at higher resolutions faster. Most ppl only play games at 1024 or 1280 resolutions in a real world setting, few ppl would set their cards running games at 1600 resolution. Usually with high end cards 1280 is generally a good setting to get good FPS and a nice high resolution.

Games which will be based off the DOOM3/Unreal3 engines will not be slow running off a X800 series card or a 6800 series card with the 256MB if their running say at 1280 resolution. The 512MB cards which are supposely coming out next spring, ain't worth the wait, if it's only gonan increase performance on higher resolutions, and a slight over all improvement.

Doom3 was originally made for a 9800PRO to run very well on, so I doubt the new games will run crappy on a X800 series or 6800 series card. Also by the time the 512MB cards comes out, PCI-Express might actually be solid (doubt it but, it's possible). For me it aint worth the wait, with Doom3 and HL2 coming out in the next few months (Doom3 in the next few weeks), I'd rather pick up the X800XT PE and enjoy smooth play rather than waiting for something that is gonna give me little improvement overall. And usually at that time they'll be working on a new card so by the time you get the 512MB versions something new will be out soon.

Pirate:

Doom3 won't be slow, but Unreal3 based stuff will be. They said themselves that GF6800 ultras would be pulling 30FPS at 640x480. Their high-end target is for cards with 1GB memory, and at least 3 times the performance of current highend.
