I'm within about 2 weeks of getting the Sharp Aquos 52inch 1080p 8th gen 4ms LCD and have a DVI to HDMI cable for my 7800GS EVGA SuperOC. Curious what peoples experience has been running large displays? I run my comp currently at 1600x1200, so a jump to 1900x1080 s/b less then a 7% increase in demand on my video card, I'm thinking FPS wise I might see a drop of 1 or 2 fps. Any suggestions to head as I convert to the new display?

Thanks in advance!

That big of a screen you won't get a dramatic performance drop from a 7800GS while playing games. I don't think any games even support that high of a res. Why do you need such a big display for your computer? Even 30 is too big imo.

SLI might be a wise choice though, as they were designed for high res gaming.

Its not that I need it, but it is part of my home entertainment system and I might as well utilize the LCD and get the most bang for my buck! Plus I'm just imagining playing oblivion on the beast right now... will be beautiful and hook that puppy up to my Onkyo amp and it will be like i'm there!

1600x1200 in oblivion with most settings maxed I was getting min 20fps, with the grass mod.

As the original poster pointed out there is an 8% increase in pixel count for his new display over his old display. The stress on your video card is related ONLY to resolution not to screen size. If I have a 20" 1680x1050, that stresses out a video card a lot more than a 32" LCD tv that does 1366x768 or 720p native.

Expect the same-ish FPS in games, slightly lower, keep in mind that games that support 1080p are slightly fewer than those that support the oddball 16:10 resolutions (1920x1200, 1680x1050), but there are lots of tweaks and hacks on widescreen gaiming forums.

Enjoy your big LCD TV - I'm looking forward to my 1080p front projector coming soon (either Sony Ruby or Mitsu HC5000 depending on street prices) I will be moving screen sizes to 106 from 92. I still spend more time gaming on my 32 LCD though.

Yeah I figured I'd get a bit of a decline in fps, but really most games I won't notice it. Oblivion being the one I would feel it the most. Then again in about a year I'm building a new comp anyways. I am holding off for the 45nm octal quad or orctal cores, plus who knows if SLI will still be the thing in a year. I know by then Nvidia will have their new processors out too, G80 if I recall.

Nice I almost considered going down the projector road, but two things prevented me.

1. size of my condo (600sqft) does not really allow for such
2. I hated the fact that most projector bulbs last in the range of 4k hrs and cost 150-450 depending on models.

The newer models have some incredible contrast ratios and the colors are wonderful! 106 inches... that's gaming!

Thanks for the feedback Im just trying to make sure if there is anything I should consider prior to the jump.

Thank you sethk, shocked to see the going on about size. High def is really nothing new. It's just res, now TVs have ones that don't suck.

If your TV doesn't have DVI, you are looking at possible under/overscanning problems. I know I want to trade my westy for an SXRD. But with HDMI it overscans according to avsforums. I believe it too because I tried it on my westy. Underscanned, and the PC menu grayed out. Little black bar around the screen. Think with 42" I'd be able to deal, but in essense, it's like you are trying to run it's native resolution but are not. No 1:1 to pixel mapping. DVI is perfect and they are singally the same so I think it lies in the "handshake." Driver can compensate with funky resolution solutions. Say for the SXRD overscan, people claim they can get the razor text back at oh 1818*1015, you know, some F'ed up shit like that. Without it, where's the start bar? Hell if you'll know, should your TV overscan as bad.

Hmm thanks for the information. The TV does not have a DVI, thus the HDMI use. I'll hope for the best and obviously not get rid of my 20 incher in case its really bad!

Well I hooked up the computer to the Aquos 52 inch LCD this past Sunday and at first it recognized it as 1080i signal. The monitor under the 7800GS control panel showed as Sharp HDTV. The resolution came up as it was set for my viewsonic which is native 1600x1200. After changing it to 1920x1080 boom the Aquos came up with 1080P signal detected. The screen came alive. The Aquos does have a bit of overscan, that I was able to adjust out by using the 7800 GS advanced options, which were really trick, you go into the advanced over/under scan settings and litterally drag the edges of the screen to the edge of the LCD. Walla you now have your icons and start bar back!

Anyways amazing screen, worth every penny!

See here for several pictures: Click!

So the concerns over DVI to HDMI conversion went away quickly when within 15minutes the computer was effortlessly displaying at 1920x1080 true 1080P signal. The link above shows some Oblivion scenes as well, just amazing clarity!

OK so to help some that might have the same issue I did. The over under scan is non-existant on the Sharp Aquos IF you setup the TV correctly. What I did not do day one is go into view mode and tell the TV to map Dot to Dot (or in our language pixel to pixel). The text then came alive on screen. Clear as if I was reading it on my 20 inch LCD. No longer did I have to adjust for an under / over scan. The screen is truly 1920x1080 and that entire landscape is viewable if you set the TV up correctly. All I had to do is press the View Mode button and select Dot to Dot.

So truly there is no loss of clarity from going 20 to a 50 inch only thing was gaining a whole lot of gaming real estate!
