5080 Reviews

Of course with MFG it will be faster... but not exactly the same experience depending on the game etc.

Yes, 3x/4x MFG is available in Cyberpunk if you have a 50 series card. And latency is fine at 4K with a 5090 with a very playable game.

Hi. Here 5080 is much slower than 4090, on 1440P. But with MFG 5080 will be faster?View attachment 707106
We will know in less than a hour if 4090 with FG 2x pumps more FPS /2 or less than 5080 with MFG xN pumps FPS /N
5090 is more efficient in MFG than 4090 with FG or in other words have better scalability of frame generation algorithms. Most likely because implementation for Blackwell uses FP4 model versus FP8 on Ada Lovelace.
If this is the reason and it seems likely 5080 should be more efficient for frame generation also.

Or in other words if someone likes* FG and has fast monitor then 5080 can be faster card.
Let's use napkins...
From Techpowerup review 5090 has 54 fps -> 105 fps in 2x mode so scaling is 94.4%. 4090 has 74fps -> 74fps so scaling is 72.1%
In this case expected numbers are:
4090: 152.4 fps -> 262 .3 fps
5080: 132.7 fps -> 258 fps

Still not faster than 4090 even in this case.
And keep in mind that 5090 has massive memory bandwidth advantage over 4090 while 5080 has actually slightly slower bandwidth (1.01 TB/s vs 896.0 GB/s). Also 8GB more VRAM is already needed in some of today's games with max settings to use FG.

But then again 4090 here is just 1.6% faster and limited to 2x frame gen while 5080 will do also 3x and 4x and you won't probably want to 4x frame rate from max settings anyways and rather use DLSS. Also 4090 are crazy expensive even for second hand cards with around year warranty which execution might be problematic so...

Uh thank you so much for large explanation.

Difference between 5080 and 5090 is massive when using MFG and DLSS4,from this reviews.

Actual scaling for frame gen 2x is 82.3% vs 4090's 72.1%
4090 has 74fps in CP2077 with 2x FG and 5080 has 64 fps.
There is improvement but not as much as 5090. IMHO it is memory bandwidth which is the main limiting factor here. Still better scaling than 4090 which also shows they must run different models.

EDIT://
Native 5090 is 54.2% faster than 5080 vs at 4x it is 63.3% faster.

BTW. FG/MFG is constant cost and scaling will depend on input frame rate.
5090 not only has better scaling but starts from higher base frame rate - still it is much faster GPU

It all depends on the game Dragons Dogma 2 saw a big jump but Final Fantasy was in single digits over the 4080.

TechPowerUp and The FPS Review are both showing 12-15% improvement at 4K over both the 4080 and 4080 SUPER. As with the 5090, it isn't worth it if you have the equivalent Lovelace card at these prices. Hopefully the move to 3nm with Rubin will show us big gains again.

No point in upgrading from say 4080 or 4070 Ti Super. But worth it if you're using 3080.
Looks to be a good overclocker, almost 13% from Techpowerup review.
Yes once again upgrading in slot every generation is showing to be pretty pointless. Cheers to all the 3000 series holdouts! I'll buy a 4080 if someone wants to sell it for less than retail 3 years later... Hit me up!

If there is a bang for buck card at all its the founders 5070 and you just suck it up with the 12G of vram. Maybe an AIB 5070ti will be OK but those prices will be 5080 founders or more I'm guessing...

They are bringin FG 4x to the 4000 series cards. So, dont need a 5000 series for the fake frames.

Talk about a huge letdown. This is a 5070 card.

This is laughably bad. It trades blows with a 4080 Super, that's just plain shit!

I briefly upgraded from my 3080ti FE to Gigabyte 4080 Super OC and found it to be barely faster in the games I play, in same cases actually slower, and subquently returned it. If the 5080 is on a par with that then it's not even an upgrade for me!

Anyone with anything better than a 3080 should ignore the 5080, unless all you wanna do is play Cyberpunk 2077.

One Nvidia guy said it could now be technically possible* on all RTX card but we all knew it should be possible on at least Ada Lovelace. In fact the only reason FG was limited to 2x was for Jensen to be able to say 5070 had 4090 performance.
There was no confirmation about MFG coming to 40 series cards and only something like they maybe will think about it.

*) Possible doesn't mean feasible as viable/usable frame rate improvement tech. Turing and Ampere don't even support FP8 and would need to run FP16 models - how that works we can see in how bad Transformer model runs on 20/30 series cards.
It is also unclear if MFG on Blackwell runs FP8 or FP4.
Worse FG 2x scaling can be explained by using higher precision.

I don't know what games you play but I don't think the 3080 ti is faster than the 4080S in any games I saw that were reviewed.

Its something with change pcie /speed in mboard bios.
Yes, he wasn't able to run at 5.0 speeds (which the card is designed for) and was only able to be able switching to 4.0 in the bios. This was with a 5.0 motherboard.

Did you even watch the video? He explains it all.

Someone on reddit mentioned this. Nah i will watch soon. Thx

MFG 2x is coming to the 4000 series last I checked. 3x-4x is not, unless you have a source for that.

Even at a CPU-limited resolution like 1920x1080 the 4080 SUPER is 25-30% faster.

Only thing 3080Ti has going for it is faster memory bandwidth but it still loses in all benchmarks.
3090 I could agree upgrade would be kinda pointless and feel like side-grade but with 3080Ti.. come on!
It is more like performance wasn't improved enough versus price to bother - which is understandable.

...that said today with DLSS Transformer taking massive performance hit on 20 and 30 series compared to 40 and 50 series that these older cards don't look that hot.

I could be wrong but doesn't the 4000 series already have FG 2x? Or it just FG 1x?

The 3090 and 3080 Ti are both around the same level of performance.
3080 Ti has 12GB and not 24GB
You were probably thinking about 3090 Ti
No, I was just thinking about previous Ti cards and didn't confirm my memory. The 1080 Ti had 11GB vs. 12 GB on the Titan X and 8GB on the 1080, for example. I had forgotten that they didn't increase the memory on the 3080 Ti over the 3080 12GB.

Could just be a confusion of terms again. That might be what they're calling the original "DLSS 3" frame generation now.

There's just no way I can justify on principal upgrading to the 5xxx series from my current 4080

My 4080 was a 50% upgrade from my 3080

And my 3080 was a 40% to 50% upgrade from my 2080.

But the 5080 being ONLY 10% to 15% than my 4080 is a joke.

And the 5090 costing $2,000.00+ and it's only a 25% to 30% "upgrade" over the 4090 is also a joke.

These are the worst gen to gen "improvements" in a super long time.

Nah stay with 4080. Even there are no good games actually. Maybe CB 2077 or Doom Dark Ages in May or maybe Stalker 2.

Exactly

My monitor is a 45" OLED 3440 X 1440 res

Gaming at that resolution everything set to ultra with my 4080 is buttery smooth in every game I currently play.

So people that already have $800 video cards can skip the new ones?! What a relief! I agree with your statement but we all know Nvidia has been stingy with the vram on sub $700 cards for a while now.
Something like that ;)

12 GB seems to be holding up ok as newer games will likely require turning down some settings to get decent enough frames to enable frame gen viably.

This generation is more disappointing than the GTX 500 series.

The most disappointing thing with the 5xxx series is three things;

-Very minimal "upgrade performance" over previous gen. A 5080 only 10% to 15% faster than a 4080 WTF. And a 5090 is only 25% to 30% "better" than a 4090. Where in previous gen to gen, the performance delta would be 50% to 75% for the new gen card over the old gen card. But now we're only getting 15% to 30% of an "upgrade" not the typical 50% to 70%, so LOL come on nVidia.

-And a huge price increase, the 5090 is $2,000+ the 4090 was $1599, yet the performance upgrade is the most minimal ever between 90 series.

-Power requirements and heat, these cards require lots of wattage and they run pretty hot.
