504 error in IE. Help pls.

Im getting an error when i open ie. I can't access anything, even different browsers are not working. I thought it was a virus, and i just cleaned it all off but still no go. Heres what IE displays when it starts.

Server not responding

The server is down or not responding.

Try you request again later.

Before i cleaned the viruss SERVER was highlighted as a link and linked to an external site www.ntsearch.com/...... etc.

Also at the title it says 504 Server not responding.. ive never seen this error so im lost as to what it is.

any help at all would be great.
 
504 - Gateway Timeout
Only occurs when a web server is acting as a proxy or gateway. Indicates that the next server in line did not respond in a timely fashion.

Sounds like some spyware program actually set up proxy settings. Check your hosts file to make sure that it hasn't edited that as well (C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts -- the file doesn't actually have an extension, open it with notepad).

Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D to clean things up, and that should do it. You probably won't be able to change any proxy settings/redirects in browsers until you remove the host program anyway, so it's not worth changing.

Oh yeah, you may also want to go into MS-DOS and ping www.yahoo.com, and then tracert www.yahoo.com so see if it really may be a server thing, but chances are slim; this sounds like malware.
 
yeah i already did a few pings last night and thats fine.. The links have disapeared after i removed all the virus;s (manually). Ive ran adaware and i cleaned it up.. im gonna check the proxy settings.

i should note that the computer has win98.. its not my comp.

edit can't find the proxy settings, that directory isnt for win98..ALSO what should the settings look like?

Proxy settings should be in IE (tools, internet options) -- and they should be blank. Even uncheck "automatically detect settings" for a slight speed boost.

Otherwise, hosts file is located in the same place -- WINNT is interchangable with Windows in that string.
 
it was blank.. but it was selected as a proxy server, when i deselect the proxy it does the regular "THe page cannot be displayed".

Which may be good in this case. Just to make sure, what type of network is the user on? Standard cable/dsl? W. or w/o router? Managed network?

The page cannot be displayed may be due to incorrect network settings (who knows what the program set it up as). .. . so as always, make sure pings respond, then check the hosts file again as listed above. It may be resolving popular domains to a bogus IP.

Test it with random, uncommon sites, like edu's.
