500Mhz RAM Compatibility

I've just ordered a DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D, and on impulse I decided to order some Geil Ultra PC4000 DDR RAM to go with it (1GB). I thought this would give me much more headroom for overclocking the shortly arriving 3000+ venice, without having to OC the RAM too much.

I then realised that most Athlon 64 boards (to my knowledge) only support PC3200 or 400mhz RAM. Anyone know if the 500Mhz RAM is compatible? Please help! Thanks!
 
I would not worry about this most boards will support memory of this speed. I've tested my GEIL PC4000 Ultra Plat in a friends AV8 /w his 3000 chip. And I can take it all the way up to 250x2 = 500

Just thought of something... In the unlikely event that the mobo doesnt support this speed of RAM, motherboard use the memory underclocked at 400mhz, or would it just not boot the RAM at all?
 
More than likely the since the motherboard only supports PC3200 then thats what it will boot at and you will have to set it up to PC4000 manually. Anyone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
 
Read up on overclocking, cause that is what your gonna have to do. An Athlon 64 3000+ runs at 200mhz (memory) x 9 (mutli) = 1.8ghz. Thats its, anything other than that is not the official speed, so its technically "not supported".

You should be able to hit 250mhz (PC4000), but you might have to drop your multiplier, make sure you lower the HTT to 4x, and spend a great deal of time tuning the ram. 250mhz x 9 = 2.25ghz, so if you run your ram at its speeds with no other changes you'll be running faster than a 3500+, you shouldn't have any problem, but be prepared to do some tweaking. And when you first plug your ram in it WILL automaticlly run at 200mhz since thats the proper speed of an A64. But fast ram will always run slower, you could run it at PC2100 (133mz) or PC1600 (100mhz) if you really wanted to, but the board will default to PC3200 (200mhz)

You would want to set your HTT to 3x , not 4x. A 4x multi for HTT is somewhat notorious for not working properly.
 
Right, I built it up, its very pretty and all... but it doesn't work. What I have is a common problem, its to do with Windows not copying the SATA drivers from the floppy properly in setup. I am in the middle of making a custom XP CD with nlite, onto which i will integrate the SATA drivers for the Samsung drive. However, I have done some reading up, and I noticed that some people have fixed it simply by enabling SATA in their BIOS, but I can't find any option for enabling SATA that doesn't require you to enable RAID aswell... I don't want a RAID array.

Heres what i am asking:
I don't know anything about RAID... but I have a feeling that I saw somewhere that RAID 0 is simply SATA, and then the array starts with RAID 1, etc. I saw on a forum that someone managed the install by enabling RAID even though they were not using RAID... should I try this? Thanks everyone!
 
Sorry I know all this is unrelated... I'm hijacking my own post and I'm sure it's against the forum rules... but I will move this to a new thread once I have the time (and if the solutioon actually works). I found out after looking around that the SATA drivers will not usually successfully copy from the floppy disc during the setup process, and will often say that things have failed to copy etc.

I then saw that someone had solved the problem by integrating the drivers needed into a custom windows disc using nlite (www.nliteos.com). I downloaded nlite, created the custom disc, made it an ISO and burned the ISO with nero. I am now formatting the drive with the windows xp pro custom disc - I will update this post when it;s finished to say whether it is continuing to the windows install part when it has copied the files across.
 
The only way you will even need drivers is if you are doing a RAID arrary, otherwise since the SATA controller is built into the chipset on the NF4, windows treats it like IDE channel, so it'll install fine, if your looking for RAID, then you'll need your floppy.
 
Right, thanks everyone for the replies... i got it working im typing as we speak.

I had to create a custom XP disc with nlite, and integrate the SATA drivers off the floppy disc. I then made an ISO of it and burned the ISO to a CD. Booted it up, formatted etc, installed, and it;s brilliant. Fast as lightning - I can run Battlefield 2 Demo at full settings at 1152x864 @100hz, which i wasn't expecting with this processor at stock speeds.

But yeh, works like a dream, and this is how you do it. Oh and by the way, the RAM does run at PC3200, whoever said that was right, so thanks. Only problem now is the memory dump blue screens I'm getting when I try to increase the Bus speed.
