Warning: Long story.
My old power supply was dieing. Occasionally the system would refuse to power on; I'd open the case and push the connectors tight and try again, and usually it would come back to life as if nothing had been wrong. Now I was happy with my computer except for these phantom power issues so I tried to just grin and bear it.
Eventually the system stopped powering on all together. I brought the computer over to my buddy's place and we made a day of tearing it apart putting it back together with an el-cheapo PSU from an OEM. The system powered on; but would occasionally freak out and require a complete power-down and a cool-down period before it would re-cooperate.
I hit Newegg and this forum and with my budget and some [H] advice I bought a 500w Antec power supply that I'm extremely happy with. While I was at it, I also got a little spend crazy and bought a new mobo (in sig) and took advantage of the AMD price drops and picked up an X2 4800. Oh, and nifty Zalman coolers for my video card and new CPU. (I told ya, spend crazy.) All-in-all, I spent about $500, and got a nice upgrade. After that; all was well with the world. Or so I thought.
After about a week into the new build. I wake up one morning to power on my system (that had been performing wonderfully up to this point). I push the power button and all I can hear are the crickets chirping. I have a wonderful freak-out and consider crazy shit, like RMAing my new PSU. After about the third day, the computer no longer powers on, putting me back at square one.
On a lucky start up I head into the BIOS and in the power settings menu I set the computer to restart on power failure. After doing that, the computer would start by flipping the power switch on the PSU itself. An ugly fix, but I didnt know what else to do.
This afternoon I was playing with an old PGA478 motherboard on my desk seeing how high I could OC it on stock air. I had it on my desk sans-case and to start it I pulled the power switch out of old OEM case. The system started up and I had my fun.
Thats when it hit me, like a lightning bolt from god. I slipped the side off my main computer (the one with the supposedly bum PSU) and attached the Dell power switch. Son of a bitch powered right on. I shut it down and restarted it with the new switch about six times and had a nice little laugh at myself and at my brand new $500 power switch.
Sorry for the long post. But at least it had a happy ending. The new power switch got routed out the back of the case and is duct taped to the side. My first mod.
