PCWorld has posted a list of 5 playful tech pranks. They list the age old “broken LCD” prank so I thought I’d post the image we always use (below) for that prank so that you can use it too.
 
I know people that have set a picture similar to that as their screen saver. I'd start something on someone's laptop at an office, walk away, and come back to that. Have to admit, it tripped me up the first time.
 
I had a customers laptop that looked like this....but it was not a screensaver/desktop background but the actual screen itself.
Complete with white paint scuff marks on the lid of said laptop, and chunks of the palm rest broken off, as well as keys missing from the keyboard, they wanted me to "fix" it for them for as cheap as possible (which in their mind was less than $100), needless to say I called them back saying it was not cost effective to fix, and when they get pissed off at their S.O. to not throw their laptop at them.
 
The screen of my Gateway XHD3000 looked something like that when it failed on me and I proceded to take my frustration out on it (it failed just two weeks after the 1 year warranty expired and Gateway basically tells you that you're SOL and doesn't offer out-of-warranty service for a fee).
 
Has anyone developed an app where the 'broken' image sits on top of the apps? Like an option to have it always on top with 70% opacity?
 
I remember doing the fake icons joke. The one where you print screen the desktop then set the pic as the background and then hide all the icons. People try and click the icons but there just part of the wallpaper.
 
what ever happend to the CD tray coffee cup holder? The one when you clicked on it and your CD tray opened.
 
I was in a networking class back in the Win9x days and would drag the desktop folder off of the other workstations.. after a few minutes the desktop would go to a blank screen, the student would go up to the teacher to say it's broken or whatnot, I would then immediately put it back before the instructor got to the desk..

It's a screen savor that looks exactly like a BSOD. It will give them the blue screen, and after 10 seconds it will pretend to restart Windows, and then it repeats the cycle over and over. It's the best when they see it and they turn off their computer. :D
 
work in a school, so i set all the HP printers to say "WHITE TONER OUT" using a script :)
 
Not bad pranks, but they're pretty tough to pull off if your coworkers don't leave their phones around and always screen lock their computers when they step out.

One of the best computer pranks someone played on me was while I was in college. It wasn't even on April Fool's Day! I was working on a Unix X-terminal in a computer lab and was doing some homework along w/ some classmates who were in the lab. I stepped out for a few min. to hit the bathroom. I came back and everything appeared normal.

About 5 min. after I returned, a picture of a naked man popped up. (Remember, there are other people in the computer lab, of course.) I turned red and quickly closed the window. I was thinking WTF. About 5 min. later, another naked man popped up. I looked around and I saw my friends busting out laughing. They confessed what they did (they ran xhost+ on my computer and then remotely displayed pictures to my terminal). :D

Lesson learned: always screen lock when you step away from your computer if others are there. ;)
 
I went one step further with the "broken LCD" picture. I disabled the mouse in device manager so that the mouse's LEDs still lit up but it doesn't function, and I unplugged the keyboard just a little bit to lose connection.
 
i find the simplest prank is to put a piece of tape over the optical sensor on the mouse
 
in our office while one of the guys was out. we disabled each usb port on his computer...he mouse plugged up usb. he had to use the keyboard to go through each one and enable them again
 
I'm guessing 'HardOCP News' is Steve right?...erased from [H] history...even his post count shows as 0
