Before you read this, I would just like to say I am getting a Logitech MX518 next week but I would really like answers and maybe a solution to this...
I would like to tell you about my experience with the Microsoft Intelli Explorer mice (All are USB and all are corded) in hopes that someone here has had the same problems as I have.
I once had a Microsoft Intelli Explorer 3 optical mouse and it was fine for a year. It then started acting strangely, At first the mouse kept losing power for a few seconds and then comes back on. The problem then got worse as the mouse completely lost power and did not come back on until i unplugged it and plugged it back in the USB port. Finally it got so bad that it only powered up for a few minutes at a time and never powered up again.
I rang microsoft and explained the problem, and they sent me a free replacement as it was part of their life to warranty. Since they no longer make the Intelli Explorer 3, they sent me the version 4 instead and I was very pleased with it
About 3 months later, this mouse begain to act the same way as my Intelli 3 did, mouse losing power for a few seconds and then comes back on. I tried all I could to fix it but nothing helped so I rang Microsoft again and they sent me another replacement.
I recieved the replacement mouse and all was fine for another 3 or 4 months but then the problems I had in the past are happening again, I ring Microsoft and they said its most probably a brake in the wire, they send yet another replacement.
I decided to be more cautious this time round, to avoid the possibilities of the wire getting damaged, i stuck a plastic tube around it. Anyway 3 months have passed, it's now the end of March and the same damn thing is happening with this mouse!
Basically when the mouse loses power a few things happen...
- LED Light flashes or goes out for a second
- When you pull out a USB device, windows XP plays a sound, this sound plays when the mouse stops working
It can lose power at anytime and it happens randomly, sometimes it can happen 5 times a minute, other times it can be fine for 40 mins.
Here is a list of all the things I've done to try and fix the problem....
Changing USB Ports - I thought maybe the USB port was malfunctioning so I plugged the mouse in another USB port and its still losing power.
Using a PS2 Adapter - I plugged several of my replacement mice in a PS2 Adapter and the mouse still loses power.
Cleaning the optical sensor - I didn't know optical mice needed cleaning but with my latest mouse, I cleaned the sensor with a damp and soapy cotton bud but that hasn't helped.
Changing surface - I thought maybe my mouse didn't like the surface it was on which kind of makes no sense as if this was the case, it wouldnt of worked for the first few months. Anyway I've tried the mouse with 2 different mouse pads, ive used the floor and the desk.... no help!
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power - I have unticked this option for all USB devices listed in device manager, it has not helped.
Pulling out all USB devices apart from my mouse - I know having lots of USB devices plugged in can drain power from other USB ports but the only USB device I am using is the mouse so this possible reason is not valid in my case.
Getting the InteliPoint HotFix - There is a hotfix for the IntelliPoint software, this does not help me but I installed it anyway
Using different drivers - Ive always used IntelliPoint 4 and 5 with my mice but just to elimate problems, Ive tried my mouse the windows drivers and this just makes my mouse feel worse and still doesnt help.
Uninstalling and updating USB drivers - Didn't help at all
Using a different motherboard - When i was sent replacement mice last year, I had an ASUS motherboard with an Athlon 2000, now I have an MSI K8N Neo2 with an Athlon 3500 and ive had this problem with both boards
Trying the mice on other computers - I've kept all my broken mice and have tried them all on my uncles computer, all of them lose power, some lose power within half an hour, others can be fine on his machine for days before they start to lose power
I've tried everything I can think of, the fact that the mice mess up in a PS2 adapter shows that it's not faulty USB ports. The fact that I've tried the mice on another machine shows its not my computer thats wrong.
It's not just me who has had problems with Intelli Mice, here are other people who have had similar problems

If you search google, there are a few more cases. I want to know why this is happening, Like I said, I am getting a completely different mouse next week but I cant game or do anything much until I get this new mouse. I have to continue using this stupid Microsoft mouse.
