Hello, I built my first computer about 3 months ago. It consisted of an AMD 3500, nvidia 7800gt, 1 gig value select corsair ram, and an asus a8n-e motherboad. I have ran into many problems such as having to RMA ram and video card fans go bad. For once it is working fine, but with my luck something else happened. I was doing homework and it was running fine, but then the screen just went blank. I restarted and there was 5 quick beeps from the motherboard and now it doesnt post. I searched for solutions, removed hardware and reseated them with no success. Can anyone help me find out what the problem is? All I want is a stable reliable computer.
 
Look up what 5 beeps means in the post codes. Go to the asus website to figure it out.

Value ram is never a value, it's the crap from the scrap bin they keep to sell at a lower price...

List your mainboard, then we can look up the bios it is using and tell you what 5 beeps mean... until then, my crystal ball is in the shop for calibration.
 
Corsair value select has been good to me. So far a year and a half of zero problems in both my AMD box and my Intel box.

Then again I don't think I ever have problems with any hardware. I just might be lucky
 
Do you want to know my motherboard? It is an asus an8-e, and I tried to look up what the 5 beeps means but I couldnt figure it out. Mabey someone can find it. So far I have tried to swap the ram sticks out and see if one is bad, I have reseated about everything. I even have reset the bios. The only problem is that I dont have any spare parts to pop in and see if something is bad. Also when I googed the problem it said that sometimes the processor or video card is at fault. Any advice on where to go from here?
 
Can't swap parts? Then simplify.

2 sticks of ram? try 1. Then the other. - 1 stick of ram went bad on me (yes, contrary to post 4, but then again its only the third piece of hardware that went bad on me - ever) So I pulled one of them. I got errors, so I swapped them out, and it worked.

Add-in video card? Try on-board (if you have it)

HDD's plugged in? Unplug them.


Try and see if you can get the system down to a bare minimum, with the goal of getting into the BIOS, then move on from there.

That - and you're posting here, so you're on the net (somehow?). Visit Asus' site and download the manual - it'll tell you about the beeps. And try Asus's forums too.
 
Thanks for the help Vette5885, I already tried the ram thing and they were fine, although I am probably unlucky enough for them both to be bad (knock on wood). Im using a different computer right now, and am also posting on the asus forum. I still cant find the beep codes. The video card idea sounds good, so hopefully I have onboard video. I am going to try that then ill update you. Thanks again

Just because its value ram doesn't mean its crap.

And if you read the OP you'd see what motherboard he is using.
 
Ok so far I have tried all the trouble shooting. Right now I have the system stripped down to the essentials. Nothing is shorting the motherboard, and so far after searching the beep codes I think the problem is narrowed down to the processor or video card. Unfortunatly I dont have onboardvideo or a spare processor. Now I can only think of two options. Take it to a shop, have them swap either out. Or guess and RMA one of the two and hope its the right one. The first option would be quicker but expensive. Any ideas on how to proceed?
 
From my experience, the BIOS tends to go berserk with a cpu problem (constant beeping), and with video problems tends to beep 3 or five times

hope doesn't tend to work for me ;)

Since you don't have spares, take it to a shop, and have them swap those things out. Only way to know for sure, really
 
Do you have any clue on how much those shops charge? Also which do you think is better taking it to best buy or a local shop?
 
Do you have a PCI video card? Even a low-end and old one will work. Buy it at a local computer shop for $5 bucks and try it out. For this reason, I always keep one around. It proves to be very useful to me many times.
 
Will they really have a 5 dollar pci video card? The cheapest one on newegg was $28. I might go to tigerdirect tonight and see what they have.
 
A local PC store will likely have a working secondhand one laying about that they'd sell you. Or know of someone who has a stack of them in the back shed ;)
 
Well at the tiger direct the cheapest pci video card they had was like $40. I guess ill just take it to a repair shop and see what they say. Do you think it will be over $75 dollars, cause that a lot of money when I could just RMA one of the two.
 
5 beeps usually Vid Card.. but it could also be mem... pull your mem fire it up see if the beeps stay the same if they are different pull vid card do the same...

Hope that helps ya... usually all newer asus boards >NF2 have the talking girl if u plug in your speakers to the green onboard sound port.
 
Dang now im just confused. I have never heard of a talking girl through the speakers, that just sounds odd. So do you think the processor is fine? Also would the comp even work if I try to boot with no memory or a video card?
